If this was on Steam, it could just use the Steam Community Overlay... :v:
Actually, its more like riding on a train and the bridge is out. Some of us realized it early on and either refused to get on or hopped off before we got too far along. Now we're just watching and hoping the others will get off before they reach the end of the tracks.
What's sad is that Activision is actually smart enough to know that selling their game on steam would boost sales on the pc.
Activision will capitalize on their own exclusive distribution platform if and when Origin becomes successful. All the big publishers would capitalize it on their own exclusive stores they call distribution systems because they would get full entitlements to the money they make. The reason they would succeed is because of the hostage scenario. How many people are looking forward to Mass Effect 3 and Battlefield 3? Millions, and based off past protests for MW2, L4D2, those millions will give up easily and join the Origin program. Buying retail would also not stop Origin from becoming successful, they can just perform the same strategy valve does with their games which they are doing because everyone has to have a EA account to play online. This is a successful business model, don't even think other publishers won't follow up on it. Video games in this society apparently are needs and not wants to the population who buys them.
My god FP, chill your beans. There's still a server browser, remember GTA IV's horrible multiplayer? People still liked GTA IV, calm down.
I've never played GTA IV online, and GTA is primarily an SP game. BF3 is not. That is a fucking terrible comparison.
No matter what EA is losing sales due to all these fiascoes. I mean MW3 is advertised all over Steam to ~35 million Steam users. Half of those don't even know about BF3 because they don't follow game news.
Stupid move.
ITT: people over-reacting when in the alpha i didn't realise Battlefield 3 loaded the map and connected to the server and would try several times to join the server until i noticed the icon in the taskbar.

I trust DICE knows what they're doing, you all need to calm down. They most likely thought very heavily about this decision and believed it was better. This is going to end up like the L4D2 fiasco, everyone saying they aren't going to buy the game are going to end up getting anyway.
more than half of those arent game platforms and origin isnt required to run the game SO STOP SHITTING OUT THAT IMAGE WHEN YOU KNOW YOURE A STEAM FANBOY
Origin is required even in retail copies. L4D2 was a bunch of people being really selfish about a sequel coming out so soon, the game it's self wasn't broken.
Sega did it even better sonic all stars racing can be played online on the consoles but on the pc they fucking removed it what, are they telling me they can't afford a server?
This is very different. L4D2 was a bunch of people being really selfish, the game it's self wasn't broken.
Are you saying BF3/Origin is broken? Were you in the alpha?
I dont really care at all, i actually like battlelog for some reason. it feels unique IMO.
its Quake Live esque, and i liked quake live
Sega did it even better sonic all stars racing can be played online on the consoles but on the pc they fucking removed it what, are they telling me they can't afford a server?
Who honestly buys a Sonic game? Especially on the PC. [editline]18th August 2011[/editline]
Are you saying BF3/Origin is broken? Were you in the alpha?
BF3 doesn't have an in-game server browser. It is broken. Origin is broken by design.
You could still use the in game Web-browser that comes with Origin. Calm down yesh wait until the beta until you start judging and saying it will be shit. I really don't understand what is so bad except for the Origin exclusive and no in-game server browser which might turn out great anyway. So the only downside I have so far is the Origin exclusive part.
more than half of those arent game platforms and origin isnt required to run the game SO STOP SHITTING OUT THAT IMAGE WHEN YOU KNOW YOURE A STEAM FANBOY
That's future prediction you fucken idiot
Origin is required even in retail copies.
Yes it is. Read the recent news.
Who honestly buys a Sonic game? Especially on the PC.
Well surprisingly it got a pretty good review score and obviously the fan base did. And yes they were mad cause there was no online too.
BF3 doesn't have an in-game server browser. It is broken. Origin is broken by design.
Uh, pretty sure that doesn't make it broken.
steam is also required on all steamwork retail games, but at least origin doesn't make you launch the game through origin, and have a broken offline mode
Origin has to be installed for BF3 to run, and Steam's offline mode works fine.
So is this gonna work like Bad Company 2's "Play Now" button, where you'd either end up connecting to either an empty server or a server hosted in Australia with a 200+ ping? Fucking hell, I just logged into my Origin account to pre-order (Well, actually, I pulled up Steam first, then remembered the whole Origin thing, lol). Fuck that. There's no way I'm QUITTING the game and re-launching it (and re-logging onto Origin and Battlelog by typing my password out twice, since Origin and BC2 refuse to store my password anymore for some unknown reason) just to join another game. What's even more fustrating is that DICE has, in the past, prided itself on being the superior company, going above and beyond Treyarch/Infinity Ward to release the best game. Remember when Infinity Ward announced that Modern Warfare 2 for PC would have no dedicated servers, then DICE proudly proclaimed they would? (which doesn't mean much now that Modern Warfare 2 and Bad Company 2 ended up having identical "rent-a-server" policies) My how the tables have turned. Now it's Infinity Ward/Treyarch/whoever's making Modern Warfare 3 that is one-upping DICE, and DICE are the ones letting their fanbase down. It's a shame I enjoy the Battlefield games far more than Call of Duty.
steam is also required on all steamwork retail games, but at least origin doesn't make you launch the game through origin, and have a broken offline mode
I'm happy to lunch Steam because all my games are on it and it's like keeping all game related stuff on one app, it's not only store. God, this is not hard to understand [editline]19th August 2011[/editline]
oh god there are distribution platforms everywhere!1111 shut the fuck up at least 10 digital distribs exist today and they work perfectly fine and don't clog up the system
There is difference between distribution that sells company-specific games and distribution that sells games from all devs. Also, it's not about system resources. It's because I want one hub where I can get all my gaming needs.
Any real hope of even trying to make mods for BF3 has just gone out the window. :suicide:
Don't you know? They're not releasing a SDK because it is "too complicated". source: http://modsentry.com/2011/07/dice-ditches-modders/ If I was getting this for PC I wouldn't care too much about the out of game server list. It would take only 5 more seconds. I really don't see how it changes things too much. I'm getting it for PS3, only because my Computer can't support games like this.

Sometimes it would tell me servers weren't full that were actually full and vice versa, but that's probably the servers fault not the websites.
Origin has to be installed for BF3 to run, and Steam's offline mode works fine.
Just like steam has to be installed to run L4D. And how in gods name does the game get broken just because it doesn't have an in-game web browser. Please explain to me the bad thing about this. Is it because you believe it will be slower to join a game? It won't, it was faster then being in game in BC2 and joining a game for me. Is it because you believe your web browser will take up extra resources? It wont if you only have 1 page up > Battlelog (Unless you have a shitty computer which means you probably won't be able to run the game anyway). Please explain other then the fact that it is not in game.
This sucks. I'll still buy it, and I'm sure if enough people whine DICE will listen. DICE, Valve, and Twipwire are the three developers I think of when it comes to listening to their community.
you can say the same for origin as it has the same features, and takes up less ram but thats irrelevant except even if origin does well, it will still not do as well as steam, and indie devs will obviously stick to steam or just sell straight from their site

"Add non-steam game" doesn't do it for me. Steam is like hub, everything gaming related of mine is in one application and cloud. I have online profile with my all games listed on it. Steam is not really only store
If you are willing to argue more after what I wrote then you are just stubborn.
ITT: people over-reacting when in the alpha i didn't realise Battlefield 3 loaded the map and connected to the server and would try several times to join the server until i noticed the icon in the taskbar.
I did notice battlelog, quite profoundly actually. Especially the part where it wouldn't launch my game and I had to spend a day and a half fiddling with it to get it to work. This isn't just me being stupid, there was a topic on it. Like 20 people couldn't figure it out. I had to write a tutorial for everyone else so they could fix it and actually play the game. That, and it requires a browser plugin, it's not as simple as just clicking a link which launches BF3 through a URL like "bf3://ipaddress". You have to install a plugin to your browser which seems entirely useless to me. I didn't like that it launches origin either, I mean, fuck, browser -> origin -> bf3? What the fuck is that about?
Did you know that "Tuskin" means "Hardly" in finnish?
How is that related to anything? :v:
The web server browser wasn't bad in the alpha and having it in game wouldn't make it better because it would be the exact same server browser but in-game The reason you might end up trying to join full server when they are not is because of slot-reserving, it does this for you on a server you are trying to join via the "Play now" button. Just put filtering to only join games that have +5 free spots. There was a filtering with quite a lot of settings in the alpha.
