Good god, I hate examples like that. It is about shopping and this is about gaming.
Why are people letting a minor inconvenience ruin an entire game. You guys are so easily dissatisfied.
all i can say is too bad if you don't like going to other stores to get other things, did you know that walmart isn't the only place to get clothes, it is also not the only place to get food it's a matter of opinion but if you're pissy that origin will encourage others to take note, than that is a bad thing because steam really shouldn't be the only one to keep all of your shit in one place
I can buy a Steamworks title at other stores like D2D, Walmart etc. Your example is invalid.
Honestly what possible benefits does battlelog have over a normal server browser.
I got an idea go into battlelog from the steam browser and join from there! Wait, BF3 wont be on steam. :frown:
While I don't have a problem with this per se, it is a very, very bad sign, and if it's indicative of anything else, it's enough to make me skip out on this game. There is, literally, no reason for it. They already wrote the server browser for the console versions, so it's no extra work. It does not improve the game at all, and in fact makes it worse when switching servers, or when playing singleplayer. The only benefit I can think of is that it allows them to plaster a site with ads to make money. So this gives me cause to be concerned. It's basically showing "we don't care about making a good game if we can get more money by making a bad game". Which means there's likely other issues - I won't be surprised when it turns out a decent chunk of the game is missing, to be sold later as DLC. Or if there's in-game ads, or if the game feels more like a CoD game than a BF game (I'm not in the beta, I don't know how it plays, but BFBC2 was more CoD than BF, and I don't want more of that). Most of their "concessions" to the PC are negligible. Better graphics? Yeah, that's good for those of you who have expensive, fully up-to-date machines. That's not many - the most popular graphics card for gamers is a 9800 or 8800. When one in five gamers is rocking a 9800 or below, and when Intel graphics are more common than 6xxx-series Radeons, having massively-detailed DX11 graphics is not a huge boon. Hell, if the game was as awesome as BF2, I wouldn't mind if it looked like any other console game.
you're talking about shopping for games, which can apply to shopping for anything online oh no amazon sells music but itunes did it first fuck you amazon oh wait no my views are wrong because im just stubborn [editline]18th August 2011[/editline] but you are forced to use steam as a program, which generates ad revenue (albeit it is obviously not the main source of income) and they benefit
Steam offers more.

It's a chore not using Steam.
This is going to go over so well on facepunch but Modern Warfare 3: + On Steam + Host your own dedicated servers + In-game server browser - Likely extremely similar to past games - DLC - Probably no mod tools Matter of opinion: gameplay 3+ 2 or 3- Battlefield 3: + Jets! + Otherwise extremely similar to Bad Company 2 - Not on Steam - You have to launch it from a browser - You need to close and open a browser to change servers - You have to purchase a dedicated server - Confirmed no mod tools - Probably DLC Matter of opinion: gameplay 2+ 5 or 6- MW3 wins for me personally
has shit prices compared to other sites like gmg, ultimatum games, gog, etc. steam isn't the only place that has good sales
You can activate most modern games on Steam now, so just buy them from there. Monopoly issue solved.
You guys need to realize that every game ever made wont be on Steam, Steam will get competitors like Origin where games are not featured on Steam at all, this is how life works and you need to learn to deal with it. Having the sole reason being "I'm not gonna buy it because it is Origin and I like all my games at one place" is stupid. Ok if it was a reason like "Origin is taking up so much resources that I Can't launch games" but having the sole reason being that you like having all your games at one place is silly.
There's no way the community will let this last
personal preference, i'd prefer to have all of my games in my games tab on my desktop rather than being in a seperate program
That is never going to happen though, you have to be more pragmatic than that. Fragmentation never works That's a strong point of consoles.
not all companies are willing to be with steam and their reasoning is sound, they'd make more money and they'd have more freedom with the game development
They are few and far in between.
Okay I don't get the people who are saying there's more and more bad news, conquest looks great, the commo rose is back, 3D spotting is fixed, etc. this is more akin to having a birthday party and then trying to blow those self liting candles off the cake
You've convinced me. MW3 > BF3, as proven by science. Of course, MW3 != Good, since CoD hasn't been good since CoD2 (4 was marginally OK), and it shows no signs of improving. So simple syllogism proves BF3 != Good.
EA and DICE are just digging themselves deeper and deeper. Keep going lads, you might find some magma.
I bet if this wasn't battlefield 3 and some other game like assassins creed no one would be willing to go through everything EA is making us go through. Also whats with the no mod tools? If little games like ns2 can do it why is it so hard for dice to have some? Is it because they think we wont be willing to buy there dlc if there is already modded maps?
but everyone who buys cod games is stupid and bf3 is beter
If people like Battlefield gameplay more than Call of Duty gameplay so much that they can overlook the blatant flaws, then they absolutely should buy it But it appears Battlefield is going down the route that Modern Warfare 2 did, and Modern Warfare 3 is going back to what PC gaming is all about. (Even more so if they have mod tools)
uh, tbh loading and exiting the game doesn't take very long.
I'll quote DaMastez on this-
I found battlelog was a really good system (I would take it over the BF2/BC2 server browsers) and the time it took the game to launch was about the same time it took to load a BC2 level (maybe a bit slower, but still, rather good for starting an entire game). Not to mention battlelog handled the issue of having to login in game (which took forever in BC2) and retrieving stats which I don't care about when I want to play the game. Should there be an ingame menu, yes; could I live without it, yes.
So what happens when the website goes down? Will you be completely unable to join a server because a website is down? If that's wrong someone correct me. But that is pretty stupid.
How long before “starts up really fast” is listed as a "feature" on the box?
Attention EA, You're a bunch of cunts. Signed, The Entire Gaming Community
I'll quote DaMastez on this-
There is no reason that they can't display the Battlelog website in-game using webkit or something. Have all the links use bf3:// urls (similar to the steam store which works the same in a browser and in steam itself) so the game picks them up and everything just works seamlessly
That's kind of dumb that your decision is based on the distributor and server listing rather than the game itself
commorose is back?
Yeah one of the devs on twitter confirmed it, PC only of course though.
uh, tbh loading and exiting the game doesn't take very long.
My vista freezes a lot so I know I'm going to exit, then try to go back to my game and it will be frozen or something.
They will obviusly change this if enough people are having problems with it and think it is bad with real reason. I am talking about real problems and real reason to why it is bas such as incredibly long load times etc. All I am seeing now Is just a bunch of hate based on nothing at all except for them doing something unique. Give them a chance and test it out before you start bandwagon hating.
I'm okay with battlelog as a service, but I would still like to be able to launch bf3.exe and play like that without having to fire my browser up and go through it just to continue campaign. Also, what happens when BF3 hits End of Life as it inevitably will? We can't play SP anymore at all, bam. What happens if battlelog is down? We can't play SP anymore at all, bam. I'll probably still be buying BF3 (as I kind of was expecting this news to come) but I am genuinely worried for the direction PC Gaming is going (just look at From Dust)
That's kind of dumb that your decision is based on the distributor and server listing rather than the game itself
That's why I left gameplay as an opinion point and said that MW3 is better for me personally
