I dont get it...Is it actually possible to get a view like this or has it been heavily edited? I have literally never seen anything like this with my own eyes, even on the clearest of the clear nights with absolutely no clouds.
Is it just that you need to go somewhere far out from pollution and towns/cities to be able to properly see the sky?
Wish I could see that every night ;_;
I'm aiming to become an astronomer/astrophysicist. So, this will basically become my life.
I think Astronomy is one of the few things everyone, of any religion, race, or sex can come together to enjoy

That first picture blew my mind.

It's stuff like this that makes me wish that when I die, I become a free floating spirit that can wander wherever I want, so I can go out in space and check this stuff out face to face.
My biggest dream ever is to be put in stasis or just have my consciousness preserved in some form, not because I don't want to die, but because I want to see and explore all the mysteries the universe and all fields of science hold!
There is so much we don't know today, we've barely even begun to scratch the surface (and I'm not just talking about astronomy). So many questions and almost no answers, it truly saddens me that I probably won't live to see even a fraction of a percentage of those questions answered.
I love space and firmly believe that humanity's future is in the stars if we wish to survive as a species. Gonna start getting a space themed tattoo sleeve next spring, and holy hell is that picture of Saturn's eye good material.
Space wallpapers and under the sea wallpapers are my favourites, they're so pretty
Holy fuck, the full size version of that The Chaos of Creation picture is 267MB.
I'm downloading it, fuck the police.
Uh. No. You can see the brighter stars and general features of the Milky Way but it will look nothing like what you see in those pictures. There's a difference between what you see with the naked eye and what you see with long exposure on a camera.
It will look something along the lines of this if you're in a really good viewing place and just your eyes, if you're lucky.

Literally 4-5 hours out of Stockholm and you can get a view similar to your bottom picture, with a little bit less fancy colors. I have seen the milky way from the Swedish countryside.
I used to live in Southern Utah a couple years ago in the farm land areas and you could see everything. That was literally the only good thing about that town, were the sights at night.
My god space is so mind-bogglingly amazing and so mysterious at the same time.

That's not the milky way though, it's an aurora.

Don't you mean carrot cake?
Is the colors of the milky way edited in or something? Cause the last time I saw one it was just a streak of bright stars and the clouds. Something like this:

Also, since I'm here I guess I should post this. Done by a local photographer and surprisingly not far from town too.

They get more colour by exposing the picture for longer, I would think
Space is too fucking cool
Yeah it needs more exposure but you can still see it.
Years back there was that total lunar eclipse. When that happened, I was laying in the backyard at 2am or so watching, and I was gobsmacked at the detail I saw in the sky... With absolute clarity I could see the various cloudy bands of the milky way streaking across the sky, for some reason mostly tinted red, surrounded by more stars than I've ever seen in my life.
It was just astonishing. The best part is we don't have too much light polution here but at the same time as the total eclipse, most towns turned off a good portion of their major lighting.

Most of the google results are similarly artifacted, unfortunately. I'm also suspicious that some if not most may just be blown up from lower resolutions.
please tell me those are real
because alot of them look blatantly photoshopped

although some of them may be false colour images, all of the structures pictured are very real.

Erm...hate to break it to ya...but I can see the milky way clear as day in that shot. It may not have the pretty colors but I can see it just fine.
