That seems severely unlikely. I would be very surprised if the breastfeeding continues for much longer and this is hardly something that people will remember a couple months from now, much less when the kid reaches his middle school years.

The fact that she's put that picture on cover of Time is much worse than her breast feeding habits. How's that kid going to feel when he grows up and sees that?

Looking from a purely biological view, breastfeeding that long isn't needed. Milk serves to pass antibodies and helps boost the infants immune system. It's also the sole food source until the infant is able to start eating and digest solid food. At that point, the child has a somewhat established immune system and doesn't need milk. This is when the mother starts weaning off the child. 'Course, the mother/child/infant could be any mammalian species.
Point is, I think she has issues to keep him on the tit this long.

There are other, less understood, benefits to breast feeding.
A chemical reaction occurs in both the brain of the mother and child during breast feeding that is thought to form the mother/child bond, but is likely considerably more complicated than that.
Globally and historically speaking, breast feeding through the age of 3 isn't terribly uncommon.
There's actually a huge difference between the US Time Magazine and the rest of the world. I don't think this was on the cover anywhere outside the US.

From what I've observed in animals, it calms both mother and offspring. While breastfeeding though age 3 isn't uncommon globally and historically, it really isn't needed at this point in developed countries. I could see it having use in less developed countries.

Holy shit. This was on my radio and people thought it was utterly disgusting that the kid was 3. It's actually healthy that she's gone this long, and some kids breast feed up until they're 4-5 (and in a few cases, kids were breast feeding at age 9.) I can't see why this is getting so much controversy. Let her do what she thinks is right.
