Not a joke. The US is going to replace human soldiers with millions of bull robots that will slowly march their way through the warzone to give the enemies bruises and cuts.
Make it happen DARPA.
People seem so amazed by BigDog prototypes, but nobody seems all that interested in the PETMAN prototype.
Probably because everyone knows that BigDog was developed to be used in combat zones (even if it is just a robo-donkey) while PETMAN was developed to test clothes.

those dogbots from deus ex are coming closer to reality every day :tinfoil:
Iron man suit uber alles.
I can't stop laughing at that ridiculous flashing red light where his head should be. Also, he is using an external hydraulic power-source, so sadly he's never going to walk away from that treadmill. I think the Japanese have got the western world beat when it comes to humanoid robots.
WTB exoskeleton equipped soldiers riding armoured mechanical mounts, wielding plasma/energy swords.
Just needs a very big gun

What's holding PETMAN back isn't hydraulics, those can be made to be very compact. What's holding him back is battery technology.
I wonder how hard it is to actually tip that thing over.
It's cool, but currently it is just far too noisy for squad operations.
I'm sure once it's not just a chassis with some motors slapped on there, and it gets a cover and some armor slapped on it won't be as noisy. If the thing is ever turned into a weapon, the sound of it might demoralize the enemy, like the sound of an M1 Abrahms rolling towards you.
I'd recommend trying to stop the loud ass buzzing noise first :v:
I wonder how hard it is to actually tip that thing over.
Pretty difficult apparently. In the 2010 demo(I think it's that one) they kick it and it walks on ice with no problems.

This is really creepy, I would hate to see it in person.
People seem so amazed by BigDog prototypes, but nobody seems all that interested in the PETMAN prototype. And we've yet to see a real metal gear :(
I feel young again.
What's holding PETMAN back isn't hydraulics, those can be made to be very compact[citation needed]. What's holding him back is battery technology.
ftfy Hydraulic actuators require a big compressor. By far the most compact and energy efficient compressors are petrol engine driven, like the one in Bigdog. Bigdog's entire torso is rigid, and filled with the various hydraulic tanks, valve assemblies, compressors, fueltank, etc, needed for the hydraulic power system. I'm not sure Petman could stomach it.

I hope they keep all militarized walker things 4 legs or more, I can totally see some guerrilla fighters lasso one of those 2 leg walkers and pull it down. (or use maybe a pickup truck and pull it down, whatever)
I like how futuristic it is, but what can a BigDog do that a Bren Gun carrier couldn't do 70 years ago?
I like how futuristic it is, but what can a BigDog do that a Bren Gun carrier couldn't do 70 years ago?
Walk on much harsher terrain, enter smaller spaces
I like how futuristic it is, but what can a BigDog do that a mule couldn't do 1000's of years ago?
Fixed.
Fixed.
Take large amounts of small arms fire, not be scared by noise?
Take large amounts of small arms fire[citation needed], not be scared by noise?
It'd scare itself to death if it was. also, ftfy.
It'd scare itself to death if it was. also, ftfy.
Well, you'd logically expect something made of metal to take a few more bullets to go down, since it uses harder to hit wires instead of muscles. Plus if it actually does get hit it's incapable of panic or fear, so it won't flap about and stop people from doing what they want to.
I'm sure there'd be some sort of armor paneling. Doesn't have to be very thick or be able to stop a .50 or anything, but if it can be gutted by any assault rifle there isn't much point in that thing. Besides, I could see portable cover being useful. It'd probably suppress the noise it makes as well.
Well, you'd logically expect something made of metal to take a few more bullets to go down, since it uses harder to hit wires instead of muscles.
While I agree it would likely take more bullets, I don't think it would take 'large amounts'. All of the robot is important, and is built to be lightweight. If a bullet hits a hydraulic line or actuator or electronics, the robot is disabled, and if a bullet hits any of the chassis or a leg, again, it will probably cause mechanical failure. I think the only thing that would be slightly bullet resistant is the engine block, and even that is super lightweight (2 cylinder), I imagine it is an air cooled 2-stroke so there won't be a massive amount of steel there to stop a bullet. Mules are silent which makes them much, much more useful, at the moment. Regarding noise suppression, I imagine operational versions of this could be fitted with a muffler, at the expense of a little power. Still, it will sound like a lawnmower. Regarding armour, that is exactly what this doesn't need. Robots don't need armour - they are not valuable enough, and the weight penalty makes it pointless.
