They just have choice in how they will present themselves. If a straight person had a strong reason to present themselves as gay (like major amount of money), they can present themselves as gay. If a gay person had a reason for not presenting themselves as gay on public (like being denounced for it), they have possible choice of not presenting themselves that way.
