I'm really shocked that Valve didn't see this coming. It's Christmas day, which means there arnt going to be people to manage the clusterfuck that is the servers right now, right in the middle of the sale and they released L4D for free. Like ?????? What were they thinking? Wasnt Steam having problems when they gave out Portal for free, with no sale going on?

I think Valve should have gave out nontradable L4D2 gifts to those that have been online since last week instead of accessing the Steam page to get it.

Now I can't even get L4D2 for free

That's awesome but I imagine it'll be just like L4D1, where I'm too shy to go play with anyone in multiplayer and I don't know anyone else with the game so it just collects digital dust. But thanks anyways steam, it's the thought that counts for this one.
