Clarkson admits he was referring to the Asian man as a 'slope' - and regrets joke.
if you don't know what the word means maybe you shouldn't be using it
and I find it very hard to believe a really old conservative jingoist never knew the word slope was a slur.
I'm sure he's watched Full Metal Jacket or something
Are you saying we shouldn't use the word slope in any context or definition what so ever because that would be absurd
I'll have to add this to the growing list of "words British people don't know are offensive" right next to "mong" and "paki."
Wait what Paki is an offensive word?
What a shock that Clarkson's racist, that'd almost be as shocking as saying he's a prick.
saying racist words doesn't make you a racist he's just an offensive personality
You couldn't spin this any harder if you even tried, NoDachi.
Wait what Paki is an offensive word?
yeah but first you gotta understand that no one actually uses it in relation to people from Pakistan, it's just for dudes who look like they're from Pakistan. and if a dude who looks like what a racist thinks a Pakistani man looks like happens to own a small shop or newsagents then it's called a Paki Shop, cos it's a shop and it's owned by a guy who we've been told looks like a guy from Pakistan. it's an EDL thing they use as a slur against dudes who look foreign, not a legitimate term for referring to their nationality.
[editline]23rd April[/editline]
you could be from Iran, or Russia, or anywhere where there are people who are brown and look foreign, and they would still call you a Paki. and that's where it gets super racist, and that's why it's an offensive term our own home-bred cancerously nationalist scumbags use as a derogatory slur.
okay? you're forgetting your keyword though in this absolutely pointless comment
your context is a closeknit group of friends. great. good for you. you have friends of different backgrounds and you have a derogatory sense of humour. that's great. everyone has that
It was a joke, and the context that is important here is it was said with no offense intended.
It's peoples good right to take offense, but that's no reason not to allow people making jokes.
If Jeremy would have spent the entire episode ignoring Asians, refusing to acknowledge them, and insulting them because of their race then I would agree, and find it disgusting that he would treat people different based on the colour of their skin.
Having a wordjoke, with a slope on a bridge is innocent, no problem, and inoffensive.
If people do find it offensive, fine, but thats their problem, not Jeremy's.

You what?
How old are you? There's no way a normal healthy adult would make such crooked analogies.
There's a slope in your way of thinking mate. :v:
But seriously... get out.
If you think saying "But there's a slope on it", when an asian man is walking a crooked bridge is the same as saying "I hope your children get cancer, jk haha" then you are seriously too dumb to have a discussion with.

Pretty sure we invented the word Paki as a derogatory term.
Wait what Paki is an offensive word?
Only when said with the intent to offend or insult.
Otherwise no.
That's why black people can't sing a song without saying the word nigger 200 times.
It's not offensive, because it's not ment to insult or offend. When I say "What's up nigga", that shouldn't be a problem either.
But when I say "Get out of my store. Why? Because I don't serve niggers" THEN it becomes offensive, disgusting, racist and insulting.
Never understood how so many people could find that shit offensive. I don't even care, I find it funny. Those few asians/caucasians whom complained need a sense of humour.

Got my black friend Daniel sitting right here next to me Cone. He says "Hi."
You know what hyperboles are right? Don't miss the point, and just acknowledge that in rap (an originally black type of music, dominated by black artists) the word nigger is predominent. I didn't literally mean all songs by black artists have the word nigger in it 200 times... Come on.
Bitch isn't a race thing, we realize this, but it's still a word which has a primarily derogatory function and is now also used in a lot of different ways. Context changes meaning, and so context also changes the derogatory function of word that refers to race.
Clarkson is basking in your outrage. Keep giving him what he wants.

i don't have a problem with hyperbole i have a problem with you saying the phrase "that's why black people can't sing a song without saying the word nigger 200 times"
if you legitimately need me to explain why then there is absolutely no hope at all

What you have said has not been made one iota more acceptable.
Well, I'll fully open up to your criticism and fury then...
Please explain, because the both of us here are sitting scratching our heads?
It's a hyperbole, we have no idea how this could be offensive? You'll be hardpressed to find 5 rapsongs without the word nigger in it, which is what I ment to say.
More accurately: There's no scrupules amongst blacks to use the word nigger, is what I was saying.
And especially in America (it's less bad here), blacks will lash out if a white person says nigger.
I know the race thing is more of a social problem over in America but come on...
If we're still completely off, then please elaborate, in all honesty.

No but it seems the imbecile team is
neither you nor your friend knows the history behind the word nigger? i'm kind of impressed by that
use of nigger or nigga or whatever in rap culture is reclaiming the word. it's taking a negative word coined and used by oppressors and using it for their own culture. it's like language reappropriation. like, the thinking is "if we start calling ourselves and calling each other 'niggers', maybe white people will stop using the word to put us down and have control over is"
it's the same thinking behind why two women can call each other sluts as a joke but it would be terrible for a guy to call a girl a slut - it's originally a word used by those in control to undermine the actions/behavior/culture of a lower part of society
regardless, nigger is still used negatively quite often in rap by black people talking about other black people
You'll be hardpressed to find 5 rapsongs without the word nigger in it, which is what I ment to say.
Spoken like someone who has never sat down and actually listened to any rap ever. I can find a myriad of songs that don't contain the word "nigga" (which is what I think you meant to say, almost NO rap songs use the word "nigger")
this is possibly the least offensive he's been and he regrets it..
in the vietnam one didn't he say all Vietnamese didn't have a brain?

Ofcourse we know the history behind the word nigger...come on..
And we both kinda agree with you, but not completely.
You say use of the word nigger in rap culture is reclaiming the word. True, but the way you are saying it, it is blacks retaking it from the whites. This is not how we in the Netherlands at least, look at it, GENERALLY SPEAKING.
We see it as taking a word from people who hate, and neutralizing it's negative tone.
The way you put it at least, still portrays social-ethnic segregation, which is something that is quickly evaporating here.
Nobody currently alive was enslaved, nobody currently alive has enslaved anyone, so we should forgive and forget, and not hold grudges between races.
Saying it is ok for a black person to say nigger, and then flip out at a white person saying it because "it reminds them of the slave history" makes zero sense to me.
If it's a problem inherent to the word, then it should also remind you of slave history when a black person says it, but it doesn't!
Again... the bottomline is and stays... it's all about context.
And since when is slut a word that men use to oppress women? You're kinda grasping at straws there imo.

It's not our type of music no. Maybe the 'nigger' rap just trickles down far enough into readily accessible music for us as non-rap-lovers to come into contact with. Quite possible. But you can't blame me for being mistaken then, because we're both bombarded with american media in which blacks use the term nigger all the time.
he says nasty stuff about the people in all the countries they do specials in
I cant count the number of times he's made fun of Americans during the various US based specials and bits and just during the regular show
it blows my mind that people are still offended by the stuff that he says, its pretty clearly his style of humor and I dont think the show would be as popular as it is if everyone found it so offensive

How is that offensive? It's a dumb and ignorant thing to say for sure but I can't take offense to it.
It's also said a lot that the British have messed up teeth, all of them. Also factually wrong, and ignorant to say, but not offensive.
I'm just so fed up that people overuse the terms "racism" "offensive" "discrimination" so much.
What's wrong with just disliking what someone says.... you have every right to dislike anything you hear, see or whatever, but that doesn't give you the right to silence the other.

Making fun of Americans is not the same; it can only be offensive when it's a race, not a nationality. I think. If this thread is to be believed.

well for one thing, i don't even listen to rap and i know that's not what it sounds like. on top of that, the fact that you think black people all talk or would sing the same way, that they're bound to the language of what your warped and old-timey idea of rap lyrics was circa 1856, is fucking hideous on every level. your one black friend that you know doesn't mean you didn't say a racist thing.
what you said is literally exactly the same as if a black dude comes up to you at a party and is like "yeah i write songs for a living" and then you go "oh so you write gangsta rap then right my man?" it's fuckin racist. you would get punched if you said that.
well for one thing, i don't even listen to rap and i know that's not what it sounds like. on top of that, the fact that you think black people all talk or would sing the same way, that they're bound to the language of what your warped and old-timey idea of rap lyrics was circa 1856, is fucking hideous on every level. your one black friend that you know doesn't mean you didn't say a racist thing.

Yeah well that's not what I ment at all. I first typed, that I didn't say it, but i'll change that to that I didn't mean to say that.
I normally don't even say "I have a black friend" unless I'm in discussion with Americans.
I just have friends. And if you ask about race, then yes they're a mixed bunch of guys.
Nowhere did I mean to say that all music blacks make is rap, or has the word nigger in it.
But what I did mean, and what is true as well, is that there's no shortage of black artists and black people in general who utter the term nigger without reluctance.
Don't try to portray me as some shortsighted idiot please. I treat every person for what they are, humans. I don't care about race one single bit.
your one black friend that you know doesn't mean you didn't say a racist thing.
Sorry but this is just plain stupid. What I said was nowhere near racist. Stop trying to be so politically correct all the time.
I said, as HYPERBOLE (which you said you understood, but now clearly show you don't) that "blacks can't sing a song without using the word nigger 200 times".
That's factually wrong ofcourse, it's a magnification of the truth, and that truth is that there's no scrupules amongst blacks to use the word nigger.
Nothing more said there. It's nothing to do with racism.
Oh no, Jeremy Clarkson said something offensive again, how dare he!
It's obvious that since he still has his job nobody at the BBC actually gives half a shit what he says, and they're just apologizing to quiet down the angry people who still don't seem to understand that it's Jeremy Clarkson.

I'm not mad at Clarkson per se, but every time someone brings up 'political correctness gone mad' in the UK it tends to be racist nationalists that champion it, and I for one would prefer to live in a place where political correctness has gone mad than one where people are kicking in Bangladeshi kids
