The more ignorant kids are about religion the more likely they will have racist/bigoted beliefs when they're older.

Why should it be optional up to GCSE any more than any other lesson? If you allow opt out then all you're doing is allowing children whose parents want to keep them close minded to do so, which kind of defeats the entire purpose of having the lesson.
Yeah like the bible.
I do think RE is important though, I mean you should always learn about other cultures but the problem is it always ends up being about Christianity and you only learn about the other cultures in your younger years. If the courses were more balanced then I would completely agree but it's so ridiculously one sided towards Christianity that what's the point of being taught at all?
All I learnt about in high school RE was Islam, every time. We did one lesson on christianity and then back to Islam again.
when we had Re a good 80% of the students (me included) could not stay awake in class as it was so goddamn boring in fact the only time anyone really paid attention was when they put on the green mile why it had anything to do with RE i have no idea
That's either poor teaching or you being a typical bratty child and not even trying to take an interest. Not the subject's fault.
Learning about other religions is important, their way of lives and culture. Dosen't mean that the school system is brainwashing you.
Religious education is okay as long as it takes place before year 10 and doesn't force religion on pupils.
I think they should be taught about different religions, but they shouldn't be told to follow any.

Which is what the education system standard over here does. We are told about religions, but not told that one is correct and should be followed. Unless your school is shit or your teacher is biased that is.
It's good, it teaches about the main religions, explaining what are the priorities of every religion, if they believe in resurrection or not, what are the sacred books, and so on. It's pure informations, there are no prayers involved or promoting a cult over another. It's usually taught by someone who got a degree in philosophy, not a priest. So.. I think it's very, very important that children know what the main religions are about, at least more than "they blow themself off for a spot in heaven and they can't eat pork for whatever reason".
If they handled it right and taught a small lesson on each major religion, then that would be fine as it shows a little about it, and students can learn more if they want to. But it's more likely to turn into a battle of the religions shitfest.
RE is good to inform kids about different religions and clear up misconceptions, but to be honest the time would be better spent learning science or maths.
I had RE all the way through middle school and we basically spent most of the year watching videos about Islam, Hinduism and other far East religions.
why not just subsume the whole thing into Philosophy
that shit's interesting at least

Im pretty sure 99% of FP just read the title and rated dumb...
Jesus, Facepunch.
I'm the atheistest atheist there is but you need to understand that religion has had a huge impact on history and continues to have a huge impact on global affairs today. Whether or not you think it should, it does, and that bears examination.
why not just teach it in history classes then
[editline]19th February 2012[/editline]
either way, RS teaching needs a major overhaul. the quality of education you get from it seems entirely up to the whim of the teacher - whether you get one that proselytises their particular cult or one that actually teaches what other cultures believe in and why seems to be entirely down to pot luck.
IF they really wanna implement this, then it should be standardized and it should teach the students about ALL religions from a neutral point of view, and with a strong emphasis that it's only for historic purpose.
thats what they did in my high school here in Canada, I enjoyed the class. Our teacher was also an athest

Most people on here are too stupid to read an entire post, and the second anything related to religion comes up they prepare negative comments.
