• Volvo unveils first car with 'pedestrian' airbags
in that case we should remove seatbelts and airbags from cars too, after all, if you're dumb enough to crash into stationary, non-caring concrete at 70 mph, you must be too dumb to live anyway
I like how you totally misunderstood what I was saying, running out behind a van in a high traffic area is probably less safe than slitting your wrists and jumping in a pool full of fucking sharks. If the driver can see the pedestrian and it's obvious they're about to cross, they're about equally moronic in terms of whos fault it is if they collide, rather than the first scenario wherethe fault is 100% on the pedestrian.
people make mistakes while driving cars all the time, and they are often very stupid mistakes, but they get to be safer because they're inside the car why is it that if someone is not inside a car any more, they suddenly deserve to die for a mistake?
Except I said nothing of the sort? And I actually like that volvos doing this? Try taking a step back and look at what I'm actually writing. Let's compare it to someone shooting a rifle down range, and some guy jumping infront of it, who's at fault.
and it's not like people who drive cars never accidentally hit pedestrians because the driver makes a mistake
If the driver can see the pedestrian and it's obvious they're about to cross, they're about equally moronic in terms of whos fault it is if they collide, rather than the first scenario where the fault is 100% on the pedestrian. Please, just stop.
I think the person would be launched off the hood and onto the road again.
Before uber comes back, this is what I'm saying Red(the driver) in the first scenario can see the pedestrian(green), and vice versa, neither of them stop, leading to the crash, thus both are at fault for not stopping. In the second scenario, Red(the driver) is driving down the road, with no pedestrian crossings on the route where he'd think people would cross the street at, and he cannot see the pedestrian(green), thus it is the pedestrians fault for getting hit due to not looking both ways if there's any vehicles driving, and not making himself visible before crossing.

If the driver wasn't prepared it's his fault too. When the sight is unclear the driver should be driving at a slower speed and be paying attention that something might pop out from behind the black thing. Not necessarily an adult pedestrian, might as well be a child or an animal.
Which is why I'm saying the pedestrian should make himself visible, and look both ways before running into the fucking road, like maybe stand at the back of the van.
Which is why I'm saying the pedestrian should make himself visible, and look both ways before running into the fucking road, like maybe stand at the back of the van.
While it's their fault, pretty sure they don't deserve to die because of some stupidity. Perhaps you should distance yourself from TestECull...
You gonna hand out a free Volvo V40 to everyone who can't afford one? I don't either. People like that are why systems like this get invented in the first place. [editline]6th March 2012[/editline] Yeah. fuck people. I hate people. I hate society in general and spend as little time in it as possible. I don't imagine it's hard to tell I'm not a social type.
are you 12
I actually find myself agreeing with TestECull. If you're dumb enough to cross a road without looking, your loss I guess?maybe you should take the five extra seconds and just turn your head to the left, and then to the right. And he didn't admit defeat, he just knows that there are more important things then arguing on a forum online.
who cares if it's their fault, why is that the issue? I'd just prefer them not to be dead. if someone was an idiot and did a lot of damage to my car I would just be happy that they're alive because... I don't hate humanity. and I guess broken legs are the best teachers of pedestrian safety haha. ALSO, almost forgot about children. if you kill a kid are you going to reassure your self by saying "well I had the right of way, it's his fault, stupid kid"
I hope you would be able to disable them, these wouldn't be very good to have in deer country.
Accidents are called accidents for a reason.
I hope you would be able to disable them, these wouldn't be very good to have in deer country.
Why? I'd you hit a deer, it's very likely that you'll be doing a huge amount of damage to your car anyway.
A great invention: Instead of getting killed by getting hit by the car you get killed from the impact with the ground after you have flew trough the air.
volvo would make alot of money if they made 940 models that were amphibious

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha [editline]9th March 2012[/editline] Oh man he IS serious, talk about edgy. Anyway, i hope I can see these on the road soon. Woo, technology!
TestECull has an acute sense of Sarcasm that many of you here seem to be lacking in. I don't care how "safe" a technology is. I don't want it controlling a car for me. No matter how small that control is.
I don't care how "safe" a technology is. I don't want it controlling a car for me. No matter how small that control is.
I hope you haven't driven any cars made in the last 20 years. Virtually all cars have numerous compensation systems controlled by a computer. Load distribution between tires based on their friction and ABS come to mind. I'm not too aware of modern car tech, so I wouldn't be surprised if just about every aspect of driving in a typical vehicle has some level of computer assistance, and this trend will only increase.
Everyone blabbing on about expensive hinges and shit: Insurance.
I kinda agree with TestECull on some parts, if you're stupid enough to step infront of two tonnes of non caring metal going 50km/h+ with no way of the person of said two tonnes of metallic death knowing you are going to do so. You kinda deserve what's happens to you, and there's probably a darwin award waiting for you in [insert your religions version of heaven/hell here]
What a stupid thing to say. You do realize, of course, that half of driving and being a pedestrian is trusting other people. For example A crosswalk could tell me to cross the street and I get slammed by a vehicle. Typically speaking even though this should be the correct time to cross I would probably still look both ways. Let's say I did, and looking to the right, I see a line of stopped cars at the next crosswalk in the intersection. Let's say I look left, and there's a couple stopped cars and an open lane maybe, where a car somewhat down the way is going 35-40 mph. Even upon seeing the car that ultimately hits me, it could be my immediate assumption that the driver is smart enough to see the red light he's approaching and that he will eventually come to a stop. Cars can stop pretty quickly, and from a distance it might be hard to tell if someone's going to be slowing down or not. So does that make a person an idiot when they cross at the appropriate time and they get run down by someone who's not paying attention? Same goes for being a driver, a lot of the time the only reason driving works is because we trust other people to make the correct decisions. Whether it be who turns first at an all-stop intersection or when it's ideal to merge on the freeway. See, it goes beyond spatial awareness. I'm sure you've crossed a crosswalk before without looking left to right every two seconds. But we can't all walk around the street acting paranoid all the time because something shitty could happen. We like to assume we live in a society where most of the time other people aren't going to be complete idiots. At least the ones with driver licenses anyway.
I'm surprised this hasn't been done sooner, how long have cars been around for now?
