What a guy.

Except if heroic people decided not to save people, they wouldn't be so heroic.
True hero.
See, we Iranians aren't all about nukes and shit
Santorum's supporters would say otherwise.

no Stan Marsh
you're just a cynical asshole
Despite him dying, this story does not sound like a tragedy. It strikes me as more of a triumph. I believe that when faced with death, we experience true clarity; all of our "priorities" and "to-dos" get swept aside like dust leaving only the concrete truth of what we really want and who we really are. This is a man who had dedicated his life to saving lives, and he will die knowing he had done everything he could to do so.
I could not envision a better way to die.
Not that any expectations are placed on her because of this but... I do hope she realizes and honors the fact that another human paid the greatest of price so that she may live. Maybe visit his grave when she's old enough to understand what it means.
"Earn this"
what's brain death? my google isn't working
You, as yourself, your conscience and the part of your body that makes the "you", dies.
Your body, the lump of flesh and bones that the already dead "you" usually controls, lives on, acting as it would normally, except without your guidance. Since you're dead.
Basically, somebody brain dead is a brain in a jar without the brain. Just a container, that used to be inhabited and controlled by you, as your consciousness.

wiser words have been said
Guys. Noobcake isn't debating whether we should keep him alive or not. He's stating the truth though, if we're going to define life. Plants aren't conscious, but they are still life.
Obviously, it makes no sense to let a human keep on living though, because they are no benefit to the Earth once they are unconscious.
no, basically what i'm saying is that consciousness isn't a qualification for life
How not? Without consciousness in any form it's just a bunch of organs doing shit for no reason

little girls who are trapped in burning buildings rule the world
What use is there in keeping someone that is brain dead 'alive'?
It is better for them to donate his organs than to have his body lay in a bed stuck to a machine.
There's always the "What if we discover something to reanimate the brain, but we decided to not keep him alive?"

wow fedora wizard alert
How not? Without consciousness in any form it's just a bunch of organs doing shit for no reason
the same could be said for all non-human life forms, especially microorganisms
but we consider them alive, don't we?
Think of the brain dead a computer without the hard disk drive and OS working anymore but the power is still running. Perhaps his soul is gone and all that is left is an empty body
about as complex as a calculator, but still a machine
He might be alive as an organism, but he's dead as an individual.
We need film about him
Quick.
This is very remarkable.
Being a firefighter, this man most likely knew full well what's going to happen: death, coma, paralysis. And he chose to save another life for the cost of his own. Call that what you will, I'm going to call it a miracle. The only real miracle, one that matters.
Islam teaches that men like this go straight to heaven. No judgment bullshit, they get a free pass. A well deserved one, at that.

What if it is a misdiagnosis?
I too would put my life on the line to save a child, as I hope all of you would too
I too would put my life on the line to save a child, as I hope all of you would too
I won't say I would, and I won't really advise you to say it either.
Because I know a lot of people who have gone through very tough decisions in their life, including my uncle who is a retired emercom worker, disaster medicine. You never know what you "would do", and there's no point pretending that you do know it. Each decision like that is made in under half a second, and is affected by many-many diffirent factors. It said to be just as much impulsive as it is conscious.
A true hero, this man. My thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family.
That shouldn't be counted as being alive, though.
In some places legal death includes brain death, others it doesn't. Its a useful state of being for organ donors, it allows for harvesting (I hate that word but it is the right one) while the organs are still being supplied with blood and oxygen.
Some people figure that if there's at least a chance of bringing them back, they should refrain from pulling the plug.
The problem is, there isn't. Its the same after an injury that severs the brain stem, the body is still alive for all intents and purposes but there is no recovery from that.

Its why EEGs exist, a "dead" brain gives off no electrical activity. I assume before doctors go round declaring someone brain dead they check these things, same as they would check an ECG before declaring someone clinically dead.
