A deceptive title, but interesting none-the-less. I know they've rendered object invisible to microwaves (not the kitchen appliance).
I wonder what would happen if you put a shrinking device inside another shrinking device?
It gets smaller.
Hmm bending light to make objects appear smaller or bigger?......
Crap, you beat me to it.
Keep that shit away from the children
http://knd.wikia.com/wiki/Operation:_MINI-GOLF Just to add to trend of TV show references.
yeah it does
But the glass is a lens and bends the light in itself
But the glass is a lens and bends the light in itself
That's exactly what the "shrinking" device does. It bends the light around the metamaterial rings, like the glass in a lens bends light that passes through it. The difference here is that the metamaterial rings let you see the effect from any direction.

Scary shit
I'd shrink myself to half my size and then walk down the street being able to bump their shoulders without them knowing it.
"By controlling how light bends around an object, researchers have built a shrinking device that makes objects appear smaller than they actually are." I came into the thread thinking of something that manipulated the actual being, I am disappoint :(
Ye it isnt a fucking shrinking device, they just reinvented the magnifying glass and slapped a new name on it. No matter is changed so no real use for this at all. also, insert "honey I shrunk the kids" reference here, I love that movie

you asshole i was going to post this

That movie was my childhood!
Impossible.
nope, we have actually made objects completely invisible already, at least at infrared wavelengths.
i need one of this for my penis
Well that didn't take very long.
The one thing about this whole "Oh just bend light around you, INVISIBILITY!" thing is - guess what - without light you cannot see. If the light bends AROUND you, it does not hit your retinas, thusly you see nothing but blackness. So unless you mount a camera outside the field (Which would be visible) invisibility via bending light is pointless.
"Well that would require some sort of a Rebigulator which is a concept so ridiculous it makes me want to laugh out loud and chortle."
Glavin!
