When I was in Italy last year, especially in Rome, there were Carabinieri in full military garb and carrying weapons around all the tourist attractions and government buildings. You don't see that sort of thing in the US, but for me at least it wasn't a big deal, and the locals didn't seem to have a problem either. I get that it's subjective, but I think saying it 'always causes distress in people' is painting with a broad brush.
I was in Rome very recently
Its still the same, the military is doing 2 man patrol cars pretty regularly and most of the major tourist attractions you will see a few men with rifles. Hell there was even some training scenarios going on with blanks I think - its either that or there was an actual shootout in Rome but I didn't see anything in the news.
Its really not a big deal yeah, its not like there is checkpoints and people being aggressively herded by armed men.
there is no benefit to telling people that there "might be another terrorist attack" other than to deliberately scare them - if the reason for doing it is so people change plans to be more "safe", then you are doing what the terrorists want, disruption and fear
also publicly announcing the "terror level" is an absolute fucking joke
It's in the current government's interests to generate that fear.
I personally think that if these measures are deemed necessary by our Govt (regardless of their political leanings) that we should put our personal feelings aside.
If these measures save 1 life then they are worth it.
What fucking pisses me off is people quoting statistics about how insignificant terrorist numbers are, imagine being the parent of an innocent child who has recently died needlessly, I'm sure it's not insignificant to them.
What pisses me off is people trying to justify and defend police cuts. Imagine being the parent of an innocent child <rest of your post>.
Underfunding our police creates greater opportunity for harm to come to innocent people, and terrorist attacks don't constitute a right lot of that harm.
