• Artificial life forms evolve basic intelligence

Virtual evolution is one of the coolest things ever. All you need to make an awesome AI is a complex environment and time.
Basically a human created some computer code that makes things remember things and do them again and then some computer programs made by humans used the code. OH WOW.
holy fuck, this is awesome
Basically a human created some computer code that makes things remember things and do them again and then some computer programs made by humans used the code. OH WOW.
oversimplifying things doesn't do things like this justice, bud [editline]11:42AM[/editline] You know, I'd love to see someone try out an artificial evolution experiment with self-replicating nanites
oversimplifying things doesn't do things like this justice, bud
I'm not oversimplifying, I'm pointing out that this as much to do with humans as it is by the computer, probably more so.
erm, where the deuce in the article did it mention that it had to do with humans? they're just testing evolutionary theory on simulated life
erm, where the deuce in the article did it mention that it had to do with humans? they're just testing evolutionary theory on simulated life
The code to remember and repeat things was created naturally; they didn't evolve it naturally. It's basically Creationism.
You mean the code that lets them duplicate themselves? Now you're just being picky :v:
You mean the code that lets them duplicate themselves? Now you're just being picky :v:
No, the code they use to remember things. It's in the article.
There ARE miracles everywhere up in this bitch!
Basically a human created some computer code that makes things remember things and do them again and then some computer programs made by humans used the code. OH WOW.
I wish you'd develop some basic intelligence.
I wish you'd develop some basic intelligence.
If I did I'd be more intelligent than these robots.
No, the code they use to remember things. It's in the article.
looks like you need to read the article. the only "memory" that existed before was computer memory. it was one of the computer resources that the virtual organisms were fighting over. then the organisms gained the ability to remember things because it gains them an advantage over the organisms that don't

It was implanted in one of the cells.
The ability to remember things came from computer code written by one of the humans involved in the project. It was implanted in one of the cells.
I think there is some confusion over the word cell. In the program, each square in the grid the programs moved through was called a cell. They put instructions into the cells, and some of them required the programs to remember what they did last, and they gained that ability.
Next, Grabowski sent a fresh batch of non-evolved Avidians on a treasure hunt. This time, cells contained a numerical code, which indicated in what direction the organisms should turn to find more food. But there was an additional twist to the task. Some cells contained the instruction "repeat what you did last time". The Avidians once more evolved into forms that could interpret and execute the instruction. "The environment sets up selective pressures so organisms are forced to come up with some kind of memory use - which is in fact what they do," says Grabowski.
I just got done watching Terminator 3 and I come on here and see this? Oh shit when are the going to send Arnold back in time to keep me alive? lol

What was the exact value of "repeat what you did last time"? I'm having some difficulty comprehending how a cell would interpret the instruction
What was the exact value of "repeat what you did last time"? I'm having some difficulty comprehending how a cell would interpret the instruction
That would be because you're not a programmer.
That would be because you're not a programmer.
Yes I am. :colbert: I mean, I may not be some gritty-low level programmer, or involve my self in genetic programming, but I am a programmer.
Basically, he gave the cells a "challenge" they had to overcome, and they developed a solution to the problem by themselves by gaining the ability of memory?
Ah I see now, thanks :)
Virtual life. Holy shit.
HERESY!!! :catholic:
The world we live in becomes more awesome day by day, fuck the world of tomorrow, this one is more awesome
We shall be gods.
Maybe we are bio artificial just like them!!!
It's at about update 88.3k. When does it start playing SC2 for me?
How do I know if its smart I dont understand whats going on :saddowns:
Real Darwinia. Shit just got real.
Let's just hope the creator doesn't open a spam email in the computer this is running.
They know my porn habits.
Anyone else slightly scared by this news, or am I the only sentient-artificial life hater here?
