So I have a question about these cars, that I'm sure comes up a lot, but... What happens in a very bad accident on a very wet day? What are the dangers of rescue crews being unable to reach the driver for fear of electrocution? What are the risks of any potential failsafes failing vs a car fire in a standard car?
http://www.teslamotors.com/blog/model-s-fire Also the car is stuffed with safety mechanism, for example it has a titanium underbody plus being the safest car ever tested. :eng101: Another fun story: Someone stole a Tesla Model S and crashed it at 100 mph into a building, driver survived. And the dangerous high voltage lines are all labeled clearly so no one accidentally cuts into it while its still energized. There's a whole instructional video here:
Great fucking job, man. Have anything noteworthy to tell us here about the trip?
There's a main wire that crews are instructed to cut to kill the power. And the dangerous high voltage lines are all labeled clearly so no one accidentally cuts into it while its still energized.
ya the tesla follows and exceeds the industry safety standards for electric and hybrid vehicles, if you ever open the hood of an electric car/hybrid you'll see that all the high voltage cables are orange (except for fords where they have some shitty plastic cover instead), and there are places fire-crews can cut through the floor of the car to get into the inside if the car rolled
I wonder if tesla will ever make a pickup model, something the size of a ranger or similar.
I wonder if tesla will ever make a pickup model, something the size of a ranger or similar.
Elon has said specifically that he wants to make a competitor to the F-150. But first they have to ship the Model X (September 29th!) and Model 3 (2018?). So don't expect it any time soon.

Is this explained in the video? What if it's underwater after driving off a bridge?
[t]http://i.imgur.com/3ZyJDy7.jpg[/t] :poot: Thanks fellas.
500 miles seemed adventurous at the beginning, but 550 miles at the end? Holy smokes.
did you keep rolling til it flat out shut down? How do you think it would have handled had you not driven at night? Headlights surely don't draw too much but I'd be curious whether it'd be advantageous to cut the drive into several segments and take the hit from accelerating
That's amazing, congratulations!
How would cutting a wire disengage a whole battery, especially if it's somehow compromised in a collision and two poles of the battery are touching something wet? Is this explained in the video?
Because EV's have two circuits. The big battery, high voltage, and the little battery, low voltage. The little one is a standard car battery, and if you severe the connection to that, the high voltage line cannot complete a circuit. The car is now a giant paperweight. However the big battery is still active and should not be cut into. I'm not sure about water, but if the battery is that compromised the whole situation is probably fubar. Most Tesla accidents don't compromise the battery, and there's only been a handful of fatalities. I think the worst to date was this one:
The Tesla continued for 7 miles into West Hollywood. Police said the driver was travelling in excess of 100 mph down La Brea when it hit other vehicles, including a Honda with several people inside. The Tesla became airborne, took out several light poles and split in two. Part of the Tesla remains wedged between two buildings. The other half landed in the street. Witnesses said the Tesla’s batteries burst into flames and began sparking like fireworks.
I think the driver lived.
I can't really think of a situation where water or anything similar is involved that doesn't already short out the battery massively and where a human as a resistor would be the prefered path.
[t]http://i.imgur.com/3ZyJDy7.jpg[/t] :poot: Thanks fellas.
congrats! What nice 50 extra miles.

would this work better in a regular p85? given everything else is equal, the lesser weight of the rwd model s should lead to more range.
Another fun story: Someone stole a Tesla Model S and crashed it at 100 mph into a building, driver survived. Tesla noted however that had he been wearing his seatbelt, he probably would've lived.
Great fucking job, man. Have anything noteworthy to tell us here about the trip?
Ohhh yes. I'm gonna make another video recapping the whole drive, and some concerning/funny/interesting stuff did happen.
did you keep rolling til it flat out shut down? How do you think it would have handled had you not driven at night? Headlights surely don't draw too much but I'd be curious whether it'd be advantageous to cut the drive into several segments and take the hit from accelerating
I made it to the Supercharger I designated as the finish, but I still had about 20 miles left in the charge, so I circled the town in a smaller and smaller diameter as the battery wore down which put another 40 miles on the record. The biggest advantage from avoiding night would actually be the increased temperature. When I first started at 2am in 40F, the battery was consuming twice the energy. You'd lose energy to vampire drain by waiting overnight though.
would this work better in a regular p85? given everything else is equal, the lesser weight of the rwd model s should lead to more range.
The D models are actually more energy efficient than the single drive models so I doubt it.
That is a pretty silly logic you have. They are luxury products and besides that the Tesla offers a few rare-seen features. Sure a 1989 Fiat Panda can still drive like a Tesla, but i'd prefer to sit in a Tesla. Or why buy a big TV screen worth 1000$ when you can get a much smaller one for 200$, perhaps its not HD but hey! Its a screen!
There's a huge difference between a TV and a car, with a car being a necessity more than a TV. Of course if you have the money for luxury products go ahead and buy them but if you aren't wealthy you can't afford am 85k car period. I know many kids who are up to their eyeballs in debt from taking out high interest rate 6 year fixed loans on expensive cars they can't afford.
Elon Musk re-tweeted about this https://twitter.com/elonmusk
Wow, what an honor.

:incredible:
Where the hell do you live?!
Obviously in the states. After the GFC & subprime housing bubble, essentially houses lost large amounts of value due to oversupply. I've seen real estate ads with houses in the midwest selling as low as 35k, thats even with a sizeable plot of land

If you actually want to live near a city you're going to look at $100k+ residences first.

I'm going to drive 700 Miles on a single charge, but I'll only go 15 miles an hour!

How long was the charging for the car?
How long was the charging for the car?
Uh... Charging? I dunno, I didn't stick around to find out, took like 20 minutes to top off before I left and presumably took about an hour to get to 90% after I plugged it in again.
