Bystander effect in action it seems.
It's a car left on the road for five days.
Nobody is taking any action because of the following two possibilities:
1. Somebody else has already noticed, and will take care of it.
2. Nobody else is doing anything, so why should you? If nobody is doing anything, then it doesn't seem like an emergency does it?
3. There is no reason to believe action is necessary whatsoever
They DIDNT KNOW there was a problem.
Ive seen dozens of cars stopped by the side of a highway before, ive payed no mind to them.
This is part of the bystander effect.
You assume that there isn't a problem, based on the actions of those around you.
(They aren't bothering, why should you?)

If someone walks by an abandoned car I seriously doubt they will just walk by (bystander effect). They wouldn't go, "Oh there's a dead body I better just move a long" they would go, "I see a rotting corpse I better call the police".

Do you like assuming people are all these mindless meatbags or what?
No, if there was a car parked by the side of the road...well what the fuck why would you pay any attention to it, theres dozens of cars parked by the side of the road all the time.
Besides, unless you pass it multiple times every day, you wouldnt even begin to suspect anything, even then, you're not there 24/7, so how would you know somebody didnt just park there after driving away earlier?
True. When you see a car stopped on the road, you don't think there is a problem. Given that many other people would pass it and see nobody paying any attention to the car for days, they will think to themselves "no problem" and go on as usual.
Yes, this is exactly the case and that is not bystander effect

The...what.
No, last i remembered, the bystander effect is when something is happening but you stay back and wait for someone else to do it.
Not not knowing theres a problem because a car is parked by the road.

To Sobotnik, apparently anyone who see's something normal and goes about their normal routine, and theres actually something abnormal, but they never noticed, is the Bystander Effect.
Which its not.

No that's called logical thinking. You're not avoiding checking the car because nobody else is, you're not checking because it makes no pragmatic sense. Seriously, from now on check every car you pass, report back to us how many corpses you find.
Talk about hotboxing!
im sorry

Oh crap, I bet traffic really was killer that day.
Seeing as how multiple people have more than likely used that busy road a few times in the 5 day period and probably saw the car, I'm surprised people weren't suspicious about it sooner.

I pass by dozens upon dozens of parked cars on my daily commute, and they all begin to blend together.

How many cars to you pass by on a daily basis.

I do not see why this is rated dumbs, its the truth. Hell yesterday on my way home from the store with my mom we saw a car floor it in reverse across two yards before slamming into trees and stopping. I asked if she was going to stop and call the police, she said no the people whose yard they are in will call.
On my way to school I see serveral cars just sitting on the side of the road, no one stops to see if everything is fine. If the hazard lights are off, the car was left until the owner could get it towed.

That is not the bystander effect.
I'm talking about seeing the same car on the side of the road for a few days. It's probably not a normal parking spot

This is not really a case of bystander effect, honestly if I see a car on the side of the road for a few days, I don't think much about it. The body was somewhat hidden, I would not go apeshit over a car standing on the side of the road.

No one probably gave a fuck. There's this car down my street that's been there for years and no one has done shit about it.
No one cares about cars parked on the side of the road no matter how long they've been there unless it's infront of their house or some shit.
Just proves that most people aren't aware of shit/don't give a shit about other people besides them selves.
I mean really, five days??
think i drove past this on the day it was found. i didnt know someone was dead in it as i thought its just a car from someone who lived near by. just like any other parked cars
The bystander effect or Genovese syndrome is a social psychological phenomenon that refers to cases where individuals do not offer any means of help in an emergency situation to the victim when other people are present. The probability of help has often appeared to be inversely related to the number of bystanders; in other words, the greater the number of bystanders, the less likely it is that any one of them will help. The mere presence of other bystanders greatly decreases intervention. In general, this is believed to happen because as the number of bystanders increases, any given bystander is less likely to notice the situation, interpret the incident as a problem, and less likely to assume responsibility for taking action.
What I want to know is how in the five days of the police knowing he was missing and surely having a description of his vehicle they never found him
There might have been some foul play involved.
Its not a highway and I've seen cars in auckland (I live in auckland which is where the article mentions it takes place) parked for months at a time, there is nothing suspicious about that.

what is suspicious about a parked car?
The argument "Why hasn't anybody noticed that it's been there for 5 days?" falls flat on its ass in Finland. There are cars that are on the side of the road for weeks, some even MONTHS and there's absolutely nothing wrong. I've checked some of those cars and all of them have been empty without anything suspicious going on. I probably would just WALK past every single day for weeks if I didn't see someone motionless and leaning onto the dashboard / driving wheel.
