Tempting, but odd, for a singleplayer game like Doom to have a beta access.
Hey if Doom 4 can have a quakeesque multiplayer then bring it the fuck on
i thought this was a new(er) wolfenstein game that i hadn't heard about, i forgot the new order even existed
Well I for one am fucking excited for the new DOOM! You guys need to chill out.
I get the feeling that, once it's available on Steam, Doom beta access won't be.
Ah shit, the new one's just going to be called 'DOOM' isn't it. I'm sick of these reboots that have the same name as the original/Tomb Raider/Sim City
See i don't mind if the remake is as good as or better than the original or at least pays homage to it.
Doom 3 felt like someone tried to mix System Shock 2 with Half-Life and put some Doommy stuff to it to make it sell better I mean, it was by no means a bad game, it's just I doesn't feel like a Doom game at all.
I thought doom 3 was an excellent game And its one of my favorites I love the replay value because its so long
The reason Doom 4 pretty much flopped was Source came out around the same time. And source made improvements like mouths moving fluidly and different techniques, whereas the Doom 3 engine was all about lighting and it did it quite well.
What are you talking about? Doom 3 was a huge flop because it changed the way the series worked entirely. Doom has always been a run and gun action shooter whereas Doom 3 was a horror shooter. In fact most people are of the mindset that Doom 3 was a great game. IF it was marketed as something other than Doom. Source had nothing to do with it flopping at all. (Hell, most people I know who are predominantly PC gamers hadn't even HEARD of Half-Life 2 at that point in time.)
Doom 3 felt like someone tried to mix System Shock 2 with Half-Life and put some Doommy stuff to it to make it sell better
DOOM 3 also had some of the weakest game gun sounds ever and the combat mechanics were clunky. essentially it fucked up the most essential part in a D00M game: shooting.
The fact that the new Wolfenstein lets you carry all of the guns and gives you only limited regenerating health (depending on the difficulty you choose) already gives me hope for it. Though I have heard some worrying things about how scripted it can be at times.
limited regenerating health (depending on the difficulty you choose)
I think this is honestly the best balance between old style health systems and new style health systems. Some regenerating health (but not too much) still serves its purpose of not getting you killed too easily but it's still not so overpowering that you can simply take cover mid-combat and regen your health.

I told my friend about the beta access and he goes: "It's about fucking time they made a game from the movie!" I felt veins in my neck burst.
Serious Sam does this I believe, where the hp regenerates a portion of your hp if you have it on easy (all hp on tourist?)
The easier difficulties it slowly does that, yeah. I think he was moreso implying a Chronicles of Riddick or Far Cry 2-style health system, though, where your health has segments that it can regenerate within, but once that segment empties, you need to use something to heal yourself to get it back.

Am I remembering this wrong but I thought Doom 3 didn't flop?
I actually really enjoyed the last Wolfenstein game, it wasn't exceptional or anything, but it was super fun, and the medallion powers allowing you to shoot through walls and other things was a blast. I hope you can at least upgrade the hell out of the weapons like you could in the last one.
I have a slim hope that it will turn out well. The way I thought of a lot of older shooters were that they felt very light so to speak. I've found more recent games to feel heavier and clunky. Like if I play Doom, I'm zipping around blowing stuff up on the spot, but if I play Far Cry 2 or Crysis it feels slower like. I hope people understand what I mean with that, I don't think I effectively explained it.
the jaw has dropped [editline]19th February 2014[/editline]
DOOM 3 also had some of the weakest game gun sounds ever and the combat mechanics were clunky. essentially it fucked up the most essential part in a D00M game: shooting.
No Rocket Jumping in MP was a big um nononononono for me.
I hope Doom 4 has co-op, that was nifty back in the days for Doom 1 and 2 where you'd have to use a serial cable or whatever, was awesome playing with a friend with your old pentium 1 machines.

I was thinking, for Doom in particular, that it would be something like regenerating up to 50 health on the lowest difficulty, 30 on the next lowest, etc. or something like that with the highest difficulty being the standard "if you want to heal find a medkit" deal.
No Rocket Jumping in MP was a big um nononononono for me.
rocket jumping in doom wasn't something you really did unless you had full health and armor. in a standard 1v1 duel rockets did a massive amount of damage.
DOOM 3 also had some of the weakest game gun sounds ever and the combat mechanics were clunky. essentially it fucked up the most essential part in a D00M game: shooting.
well you say that but the beta sounds did actually have a really good chaingun that they decided not to use for some reason. i think sikkmod adds it back in
dear id software look at Rise of triad 2013 and serious sam 3 See how people still enjoy fast paced insane fps gameplay that you started? you keep it like that, up the graphics to max level, get a amazing heavy metal band to make a new soundtrack, be best modern AAA FPS in 10 years.

The platforming sections were utter shit, and the enemies' gun sounds were so quiet from a distance that it was often hard to tell where you were being shot from. And it was completely broken on a technical level, to the point where quicksaving barely worked. I'd rather they take inspiration from the new Shadow Warrior.
I'd rather they took inspiration from Brütal Doom. I know you guys hate it, but you have to agree that it re-balanced Doom wonderfully.
Pfffft All you need is Brutal Doom. It's the original Doom games with the pistol replaced to a useful basic rifle, new HD sprites, good proper mouse support, resolutions up to 1920x1080 (Probably higher, as well) blood and blood galore, hilarious death animations and even melee kill moves either you do, or have done to you. Brutal Doom is amazing. [editline]20th February 2014[/editline] Actually TB did a video on it
I'd rather they took inspiration from Brütal Doom. I know you guys hate it, but you have to agree that it re-balanced Doom wonderfully.
I don't hate it at all. It's fucking awesome and it's exactly what I'd want from another Doom game.
I'd rather they took inspiration from Brütal Doom. damn, any time someone mentions doom and E1M1 is stuck in my head for days
