I'm not going to call this truth until we find out for sure but anyone in the white house speaking for the white house currently has 0 credibility. They died on a hill over fucking inauguration crowds, they have no credibility so if they are right, and this didn't happen, that'll come to light.

It's an independent source. An ally of the United States, and presumably other countries as well. The United States doesn't have control over how that ally operates or what information they collect.

Very, very few people are going to take their word for it in particular because the administration is headed by a monstrous manchild who spent an entire election campaign crying about "fake news" and continued to do so even after winning. Who has spent every day in office being either a massive hypocrite, or an actually awful leader.

Which is why they shouldn't leak this shit in the first place. I'm no expert, but undermining our allies' ability to collect intelligence and endangering their sources probably isn't the best idea.

I trust Mattis to do his job. I don't trust him to through the current administration under the bus. As he is part of it.

Trump is very outspoken on shutting down any criticism towards him, he did spent his election and post-election speaking about 'fake news' and he IS a hypocrite(just look at what he's said and posted on twitter about Obama compared to what he's done now) and is one of the most unpopular presidents in US history. Little to no evidence? Are you serious? High level government officials who were there said it didn't happen is less credible than allegations from an "anonymous source"?
Even if you don't believe that they're telling the truth, it's still more verifiable than an anonymous source.
I'll take the 3 star general who actually challenges the adminstration on their policies over random "US officials". The media needs to start producing actual hard evidence instead of hearsay.

No it wasn't. The SoS and McMaster both were INCREDIBLY coy with their denials. They denied sources and methods were revealed which the WaPo story literally never claimed. They denied something that was never alleged. If that isn't damning I don't what what else would be. They never denied the substance of the WaPo story.
Looks like the administration is starting to coalesce around a strategy, and that strategy seems to be complete denial. A dangerous gambit, because if even an ounce of this story is true, the story flies off the rails and suddenly they're contending with accusations of a cover-up, on top of everything else that's been piling on lately.
There doesn't seem to be an easy way out for them, PR-wise.
