Eisenhower, a Republican, won in 1952... [editline]15th June 2016[/editline] I mean, he was sort of a fake Republican in that the Democrats wanted him on their ticket originally as well. But it was still a Republican victory.
He wasn't a fake Republican, in the 50's the GOP were still the progressives(Going as far back as Lincoln, and Teddy Roosevelt.) Reagan just caused a political shift that destroyed progressive republicans who made an exodus to the Democrats who likewise kicked out their racists who fled to the republicans

That was what I was referring to, not social issues.
Does everyone forget how bad the Red-Scare era stuff was? He talked about Nazis, not even about the whole communism thing that was even worse. By this point, ISIS is winning by simply existing.
, the problem was McCarthy took that power and corrupted it. There were actual Soviet plots to infiltrate companies, research facilities, and government agencies and that threat did exist, they like Russia does today, were funding fringe parties like the Communist party usa and it's members were recruited for espionage purposes I don't really see ISIS sympathisers infiltrating the US government in the same way though
Yeah we have systems in place to catch that sort of stuff, things that don't involve the legislative branch going on a witch hunt and kicking down the doors of American Muslims.
