While fads generally annoy me, I like this shake more than that of the Harlem variety.
At least one isn't accompanied by annoying ass music.

"Twerking" sounds like something you'd do alone in your bedroom at night that you would never dare tell another soul about.
From walking at Grad? God damn that is severe.
They're afraid that the kids are gonna twerk their way to the podium.
I don't think you understand how the school can get in trouble for students doing something like this.
It has nothing to do with "old men hating kids", they were using SCHOOL PROPERTY ON SCHOOL PROPERTY to facilitate BREAKING SAID SCHOOL'S rules.
Think it's time to grow up a bit.
big fucking deal no one got hurt. i think whoever gave out the punishment needs to grow the fuck up.
doesn't work that way sorry
a girl twerks with her boyfriend or some shit
OH GOD I AM SO GODDAMN OFFENDED GET THIS SHIT OUT OF HERE AAA
Twerking looks incredibly slutty. I can't even say "twerk" as a portmanteau, even though it just means "to work".
when the fuck did this "twerking" become a thing? it's booty dancing for fucks sake and something i would watch if i wanted to jack off. kids these days man
Man, I feel so out of the times. I didn't even know what twerking was before reading this. And I'm still not entirely sure what it is. Just shaking your ass?

There's a new fad like this every month. I haven't heard anything about gallon smashing or anything since it made it on the news, and I haven't heard anything related to the Harlem Shake in almost a month, now they're on to this shit.
Next month there'll be another thing with another weird-ass name floating around Youtube, it'll have one news article about some teenagers getting into trouble over it, and then you'll never hear about it again.

Twerking has been around for awhile, yes a dance that's sexual that girls actually do is a new monthly fad that's going to die out next week, just because you don't know what something is doesn't mean it's some random teenager fad that was found on youtube.
What a dumb ass punishment.
I think this lady had the best reply to the article:
Break the rules? What does life not being fair have to do with anything? I was a principal for over 30 years and my approach with these kids would be to sit down with them and just talk about it to see what they were thinking - or not thinking. And I'd talk about some of the "screw ups" I've made in my life and what the consequences were or weren't. One thing is this generation doesn't have the same definitions of lewdness as prior generations like mine. I was in high school in the 50s. They might have called SWAT on us if we had twerked but with dances I've seen over the past twenty years times have really changed. Kids need us to ally ourselves with them and not act as though we didn't do crazy stuff when we were kids. Schools have so far to go to make education relevant and meaningful for young people.
I don't get what this hate is for fads as well
Are you telling me you got through puberty and high school without engaging in at least a couple of 'fads'? Did you never ask your parents for Beyblades or YuGiOh cards despite them being rather hollow commercial products without any real substance? Did you never do 'the cinnamon challenge' back when it first started a few years ago? Did you never get together with friends and do stupid things in the schoolyard like see who could hold their hand under a magnifying glass in the sun for the longest, or see who could sit on the bottom of the swimming pool holding their breath for the longest?
The precise nature of fads or schoolyard 'challenges' might have changed but they're not inherently different to anything we did when we were in that position.
Some people forget how it was being a young person really quickly

Another example would be back in primary school (elementary school I guess) where there was a 'fad' of doing the 'suck it' gesture, where you hold your hands in the karate chop position and bring them down either side of your groin (like how Crash Bandicoot does in the original games as part of his I-won-the-level dance). It was obviously a sexual reference and we were all like 7 year olds running around doing it at each other. Kids got a casual telling off by the teacher but nobody made a big fuss about how their generation never did anything like that
It seems that any subculture or unusual activity that others find humorous or interesting but you don't understand is fair game for having a cry about, as though being a part of this subculture or participating in this unusual activity is an unspeakable and soul-condemning sin. Why
So is "twerking" the new word for shaking your ass at the camera?

The term "twerking" is a new thing, girls dancing sexually is not.
What if this is like the new jazz dancing, and we're just going to keep going through all of this, and eventually it'll just stop because the people just grow up? They all said that the Charleston was outrageously sexual and stupid too, I almost feel like we're the bad guys here.
While really fun to watch when girls do it, twerking is pretty stupid and they shouldn't have done this. But Jesus Christ, banned from Prom AND from walking at graduation? Whoever laid out that as a punishment needs to get their brain scanned.

really? are you seriously telling someone to grow up a bit?
maybe you should stop pretending to be a grown up and have fun every once in a while christ
I'm all for fun, and My point isn't really against what they did, it's more they knew they were breaking the schools rules, and don't understand why they're being punished? I don't think anyone can actually be that stupid

it's not so much about why they were punished but rather how they were punished
"god forbid kids do anything"
*proceeds to pray for the entire year*
Oh no! Sexual dancing! Wat do!? Better go watch the cheerleaders to get this off my mind!

pretty much, also this stuff is(and has been) awfully widespread on brazil for many years, is this "twerking" new on the US?

personally i find the entire thing incredibly stupid.
Twerking is just about the most unsexy thing a woman can do; and I'm an ass-man. Jesus Christ does it ever look gross.
Oh yeah, school board overreacted or what the fuck ever; but man, twerking is only good for letting me taste my lunch twice.
twerking's been around at least since yin yang twins did "whistle while you twurk" in 2000. it's not a new term or a new thing.
[editline]2nd May 2013[/editline]
twerking is actually older than some people who post here
“verbal, visual, or physical conduct of a sexual nature made by someone from or in the educational setting.”
Rule covers literally everything that can be deemed "of sexual nature".
zero tolerance for students who cause major disruptions at school or school activities.
They filmed themselves doing a dance. I don't see how that harms anyone or causes major disruptions.
It was a dumb thing to do but I don't think they deserve punishment, but I guess zero tolerance doesn't mix with common sense.
Does zero-tolerance mean high-schoolers now can't kiss during the break?
Does zero-tolerance mean high-schoolers now can't kiss during the break?
at my school couples were really only allowed to hold hands while walking somewhere. you couldn't hug-walk with someone in the halls or anything like that because it was a "public display of affection". a few years ago there was a big shitstorm when the superintendent caught a lesbian couple giving each other a kiss, but the principal stuck up for them. technically all physical contact was banned in the handbook, even high fives, but we were given some leeway.
are you Amish? what kind of place puts restrictions like this?
