As long as we have the first amendment, christians will never be an "oppressed minority", just like no other religion will ever be "oppressed". By law, you can't oppress any religion....
You're seeing the world through SJW glasses.
SJW glasses are like normal glasses except when you wear them you don't think child abuse is okay anymore.

Just as the law should protect our human rights as lgbt people, right?
SJW glasses are like normal glasses except when you wear them you don't think child abuse is okay anymore.
It's not really child abuse since the son is over 18, but it is assault....

Who says the law doesn't protect everyone's human rights?????
Who says the law doesn't protect everyone's human rights?????
Well seeing as lgbt minorities are only just being allowed a small number of the same rights as hetero-normative folk, I'm pretty sure the law didn't really cover "everyone's" rights. Sure their right to life and stuff was obviously covered seeing as that's a basic human right. But there's been little representation of lgbt minorities until relatively recently.
It's entirely possible that a religious group can become an oppressed minority in the same way. Sure the law says they can't be oppressed by the government, but it doesn't do jack shit about society turning their backs on them.
you know i understand exactly what battledrobe is getting at, but it's the worst fucking argument i've heard all month.

I agree with your point, but it wasn't their "human rights" that were being ignored, it was civil rights. There is a big difference between the two.
Battledrobe went way overboard with the beating your children thing but i think some of you guys are being too idealistic here, sure it's fucked up that people think this way or that anybody could do this to their child, but some people are fucked up whether you like it or not. It's unrealistic to expect ~***the power of love***~ to immediately melt their prejudices. i'm not saying people shouldn't come out if their family is like this, but they have to be prepared to deal with the consequences.
yes, it's his parents' fault, not his, and being angry is okay, but being surprised is not
Funny how the onus of being reasonable is apparently on the person coming out in a hostile environment and not the people who hate gays without rational justification.
But they DO have rational justification, man! They have a book that says it's BAD!

Kind of ironic, since that's exactly how they started. What with emperor nero and all.
As much as I dislike (zealous)christians and religion in general, I don't want anyone to end up oppressed.
They need to be educated and brought in to the civilized world, and then treated like anyone else.

Really? It's not ok to be surprised that parents would assault their child over being gay? I'm sorry, but I don't live in the 1800's. We're all trying to be decent people here, instead of god-fearing numbnuts. I can't even imagine anybody doing this, let alone actually thinking like this.

I don't think you realise how messed up the world is if you really are surprised. There's a thread in this same forum about a couple beating their eight year old son to death. You can take off your rose coloured glasses and still try to be a decent person.

Oh so the feminazis are coming to not only take away my god-given right to smack children around, but my god-given right to smack everyone else around too?
Liberals have gone too far this time.

I'll never be so jaded that parents beating their children over nonsense like "muh religion" will stop surprising me.

Well, I honestly envy you then.

I still find it surprising too. How can a parent let the word of a guy standing at the front of a church supercede the love for their child? It really is unbelievable.

I never said anything about liberals or feminazis. If this ADULT wants to file assault charges, he is well within his rights, and honestly, he should.....

He was making a joke, he wasn't arguing with your post in any way.

Yeah man, If god told me to take my son up a mountain, tie him up and kill him as a sacrifice I would say no.
Being bit of an dumb atheist here but it really is harmful for huge elements of our society to use the bible as the basis for their morality.

I was continuing to make fun of SJW-glasses guy.
I think that poster should continue providing us with fun for years to come.

Ah, my mistake. Carry on then....
It sucks getting kicked out by your parents. It really hurts and makes you distrustful towards people because someone who is supposed to love you unconditionally throws you away like trash. My parents didn't care if I was hungry, homeless, or dead and it took me 3 years to finally "feel" better afterwards.
This kid is going to be hurt for quite a while, but on the bright side when he DOES feel better he can enjoy that 100k he raised.
If it were me I'd get it all in ones and take a money bath in my parents front yard.
Funny you should bring up reason, since you somehow advocate a gay guy coming out in an environment that hates gay people!
Yeah man all those minorities should've just learned their place and never done that whole civil rights movement.
Doesn't act like one. Discipline is like a lot of things - better late than never.
Please never have children.
So this guy gets 2 years of a generous income, just because his parents did what thousands upon thousands of other parents do to their gay children every year (including me, a few years ago).
I really hope he donates a significant chunk of that to a program which helps other people in his situation. There are so many organizations that far more efficiently support disowned LGBT children. I fear that he'll be keeping it to himself, and that really spoils the concept of donating...

why should he? the guy was disowned, he has literally nothing left. the money seems like a lot to us because we already have a roof over our heads and most people here live with their parents but this guy needs to pay for wherever he's going to live, food and bills, what have you, and if he's in college or wants to go to one then there's that too, and that ain't cheap.
not saying he or other people shouldn't donate to worthy causes that help people in his situation (they totally should), but asking a person to give away a "significant chunk" of money that could help them rebuild their lives after being thrown out by their family is kinda uncalled for.
You're asking an entire family to radically change their beliefs for a single person, as opposed to a single person keeping something to themselves - something that's personal to them to begin with and has nothing to do with their family.
Don't you think that's fucked?
Nope lmao
ISIS thinks it's okay to mass behead people and sell slave wives, but since that's a big group of people we shouldn't do anything about it right
Nothing here's fucked but your mindset.
