Yeah that's not really gonna help with the whole, "Torturing suspected terrorists is okay," argument.
I'm not helping anyones argument, I'm just refuting the claim that the US is the only first-world country that is involved with prisoner torture and holds illegal detainees.

Yeah and both Israel and the US can suck fat dicks for illegally holding people and torturing them.
Actually reading up on this subject it seems that both the UK and Australia are also responsible for illegally detaining Afghans in Afghanistan.

With the rationalizing of the supposed reason for the detain on both occasions, it is completely within reason to assume that if stuff like this surfaced and made their way to the media, these same countries could be responsible for far worse things than just illegally detaining suspected terrorists and insurgents.
You could gain justification for basically any action by saying it's all for the express purpose of security, so I would not be surprised if many other nations involved in the war on terror have at least once illegally detained persons of interest and used questionable methods to obtain information. Please note I'm not trying to justify anything here by saying "hurr everyone does it so its ok", but rather I'm saying that it's fairly naive to assume the US is the only nation that does this. They are the nation that spear-headed the war on terror however, so it's within reason to assume they are the country responsible for most of illegal detentions, that's as far as I'd go saying.
How come this hasn't been shut down like you promised Obama?
I wouldn't blame him for this 100%, considering what Gitmo is there is likely a lot of shit that needs sorting out before they can even consider it fit for closure. What do you do with the inmates? Where does the money come from to organise this? Who will be in charge of the planning and execution of the closure? Public opinion (this is politics, unfortunately), and so forth.
It's not a "snap fingers, done" job. As nice as that would be for this place.
anybody who would let people be tortured and held without trial for even a day is unforgivable. he can totally be blamed 100% because all he has to say is "stop torturing them", and he hasnt fuckin done shit about it.
this is one of those instances where action should have been taken immediately. its so unconditionally wrong and theres no justifiable reason for them to be doing literally nothing about closing it. if they cared at all they could have it closed in a week. replace everyone working there, have the facility fixed up to actually be livable for the time being, and start setting up trials for every single person and get them out of there. alternatively transport them to a decent facility in the US and start setting up trials where they cant hide atrocities from citizens.

Does the US government just ignore its existence?
Republicans boast about it and Democrats turn a blind eye but raise its funding.
