Even if it's still on steam, won't you still need to use that battle log bullshit to choose a server?
Hm.. if this does happen do you think they would switch retail to non-steam? They wouldn't sell Origin and Steam retail versions.
Retail will more than likely remain with Origin. [editline]6th October 2011[/editline]
Even if it's still on steam, won't you still need to use that battle log bullshit to choose a server?
Pretty much, yeah.
In CS 1.6, you could press esc, click new server. And then you were there. In BF3, you first have to wait through all loading times, exit the game, find a new server, get an error and refresh it, click server, boot up game once more, and then you can play. If anything, it's very overcomplicated.
Or as Legolas said alt tab join, faster than most main menu then server browser actually. Still would have preferred battlelog to be a post game thing.
Tbf "an anonymous report from inside Valve" could be from the guy who washes the coffee mugs.
the guy who washes the coffee mugs controls everything [editline]6th October 2011[/editline] Also I hope this is the case.
I remain optimistic!

I click a server, click join, wait like... 10 seconds, and then i'm picking my loadout and spawnpoint. Its scads faster than any multiplayer game I have and certainly faster than any game I have that looks that good. I was a tad miffed at the lack of ingame browser, but the web browser interface is surprisingly comprehensive at the moment and the integration is a great concept, so far needing only some minor tweaking and bugfixes.
Only gripe I had was lack of autojoin and party join rarely working. Otherwise it's not bad.
All right, all I need to know is: Will I still need to use Origin at any point to play the game? I don't mind BattleLog, or the browser plugin, if I'm honest those were kind of neat to use in the beta and ran a lot smoother than I expected, but I am not keeping Origin on my system. If EA still forces the Origin client down my throat, then Forza 4 is going to be my October game and EA can eat dick.
No if Steam is an alternative download service, no need.
Then EA may have just redeemed themselves and gotten my money if this report is to be believed.
Only gripe I had was lack of autojoin and party join rarely working. [editline]5th October 2011[/editline]
Then EA may have just redeemed themselves and gotten my money if this report is to be believed.
If you weren't going to buy it just because it uses Origin, you are pretty damn stupid. Brand loyalty is understandable in some cases, this is not one of them.
Tbf "an anonymous report from inside Valve" could be from the guy who washes the coffee mugs.
I'd love to wash coffee mugs at Valve.
If you weren't going to buy it just because it uses Origin, you are pretty damn stupid. I would be more inclined to agree with your problems about the client spending more time in your registry and sending packets of data to EA if you had supporting statistics. I mean, it's not like Steam does the same thing (Steam has a good amount of info in the registry, and does poll the Steam servers to check for new data occasionally). But the last part of your argument is the main problem, EA, and many other companies have relied on Valve as their main Digital Distributor for years, loosing some of their profit in the process, of course they are going to want to try and get in on the market themselves. That's just basic business.
So now everyone ho was holding out waiting for this to happen won't be able to get the D LC free from preorder "bounses". Was that the plan the whole time?

I'm seeing scenarios like this in my head, because it's happened to me in the past, with games like Command and Conquer 3 that require an EA-specific login to play, god help you if you've forgotten it: Player 1: Killing Floor sure was fun, but now I want to play Battlefield 3. Battlefield 3 via Origin: Player 2: Sounds awesome, let me go start Origin, the only way I can play Battlefield 3, which is the only game I have on Origin since every other game I own through Steam already. I'll close Steam so it isn't running in the background, since having two distribution clients running all the time would eat memory. Player 3: What are your usernames on Origin? Send me a friend request my best friends who I play with all the time and have already connected with through Steam long, long ago. Player 4: Fuck, what was my Origin password? I haven't had to use it for several weeks because I play everything else through Steam. Player 3: Shit, I haven't installed Origin on this computer yet because I haven't played Battlefield 3, my sole Origin-enabled game! Battlefield 3 via Steam: Player 2: Cool. Player 3: Sounds fun. Player 4: Sending you an invite now.
You're also forgetting playing in the same squad is impossible because EA decided to go full retard and use battlelog as their future squad system without any player testing whatsoever.

Origin doesn't use many resources, nowhere near enough to cause problems on any modern machines. If someone hasn't installed Origin, how the fuck would they have BF3 installed at the same time? Seriously, are you lot going out of your way to look for reasons to not buy the game or what? Origin isn't the best service, but it doesn't cause anywhere near the amount of problems you seem think it will as Steam, shock horror! still works fine! I hate to repeat myself too much, but how the FUCK did you survive the CD era of PC gaming?
For all the people saying Origin is fine and everyone is stupid for hating it.. I decided to make up my mind by trying out the beta. I came into it with the understanding that the game servers were way overloaded and didn't expect to get a full server - which is fine. I found myself actually unable to load the game because ( and yes this bad grammar is a direct quote ),"There is a problem with your game's setup. Please reinstall the game." So I updated all my stuff and redownloaded it for another 6 hours. Same error. I sent a message to EA live support and stopped checking it after days of waiting. Not helpful. That's my experience with Origin and I didn't like it. Steam always works for me and their support has always been fast and helpful. Hating origin is perfectly reasonable.
Now only if it ran on my PC...

You wrote the origin part as if none of those people have used Origin before, while you wrote the steam part as if they all have it and all have each other on friends. You can't blame the program that those people haven't used it before, that's a problem of those people, not the program.

I haven't experienced it with any of the games I have downloaded through Origin myself (Burnout: Paradise, Mirrors Edge, BF3 Alpha). But I have had small issues with reinstalling Burnout as it stopped working once, Origin doesn't support a re-install function yet it seems. But again, Origin is in development, tell EA your problems rather than spergin' out on here and they can make the client better, Steam would be fucking terrible if you applied the same way you are dealing with Origin bugs to it during development.

It's my opinion and I'm entitled to it, I don't like Origin and that's how it will remain. Also please tell me how I'm " spergin out ", whatever that means - I believe I gave my justified opinion.
if this happens i may need to quickly cancel and re apply my preorder for the steam version.

It would also help if EAs live support actually knew what the fuck they were doing most times, they are trained monkeys at best. [editline]5th October 2011[/editline] Plus if that is how you react to a actual argument, calling your opponents out for "blindly smashing keys", you should just give up and leave. That isn't how you make your point more valid.
Does this mean I can return my Origin copy? "Don't need Origin to launch the game" my ass, when I went on Battlelog to join a game, it automatically launched Origin on my account and started the game. That qualifies as "You need Origin regardless" in my book. I don't know if they changed it, but that's what I remember hearing in a press release.

Also, there was a post by a DICE dev on Battlelog forums where he said it was a rumor, but never specified if it was true or not.
But the steam version comes out after the preorder deadline for the back to kirkland dlc If this is all true
I pre-ordered the game on a third party website. Perhaps I can activate the game via steam?
