Cab drivers block Lisbon airport in anti-Uber protest
I like how they think the weakest kind of domestic terrorism out there is the best way to stop Uber from taking over the cab market.
So we're going down the path of calling everyone we don't agree with terrorist now?
It's called creative destruction. Old, bloated monopolies ran by special little snowflakes who had the government protect their niche markets are failing, and new, efficient models are emerging. The big winner here is the customer and society at large, because resources once wasted to keep the taxi industry alive (such as their excessive pricing) are now free to be used elsewhere.
every experience driving with an Uber driver has been great.
And I can say the complete opposite for taxi drivers. They have always been rude, and one even withheld 10 dollars of my change from a 50 dollar bill. I told him he's missing a 10 and some change and he said "no no it's okay. It's my tip". Other experiences include me getting in a cab and having the driver take off before I even told him where I wanted to go which ended up adding like 10 minutes to my travel time.
Fuck taxis.
From my experiences in Southern-Europe, especially in France, taxi drivers are often very rude and try to rip me off almost all the time. My experience with Uber has been far better.
uber isnt exactly the shining beacon of good employment either. the taxi industry has for decades moved towards large, consolidated and closed off workforces through limited certifications, jacking the price on medalions, and other horrible practices but uber purposfully skirts labor regulations and tax regulations to lower their costs
The Uber and Cabify representatives over here have stated that they're happy to be regulated(and regulations have been in the works for a while now), the Taxi representatives here have listed their demands for the regulations and they want Uber and Co to be regulated way more than what Taxis are, effectively giving Taxis an unfair advantage over them, the government basically told them "nah that's fucking unfair and stupid we don't want to hurt an emerging market" and now I think the protest is sorta over with taxi drivers saying that nothing was really accomplished and the government is shitty and rabble rabble.
You guys have no idea how fucking amazing it was to drive in Lisbon yesterday.
No taxis were around, traffic was near zero even at rush hours.
Probably blanks, and it seems like he was ready to use them at any time. Confrontations with police were intense yesterday, and the article does say they were firing blanks.
Blanks can still do damage, and doesn't matter even if it's not loaded, you don't put your finger on the trigger until you intend to fire.
