MGSV: The Phantom Pain is being playtested; expect release date soon(?)
You should really play MGS4 before Peace Walker. Thematically, PW follows up on a lot of the themes of MGS4.
So I shouldn't play games chronologically?
How am I supposed to play them then?
I've never played a metal gear game before in my life, during the sale I picked up GZ because it was on sale and I've always wanted to get into metal gear. Completely fell in love. I'm so incredibly excited for Phantom Pain. If it weren't for the fact that I should be focusing on school i'd probably try to play the whole series.

release order, always
the timing couldn't be perfect. I just recently finished ground zeroes, and I think if I finally start Snake Eater I could finish it before this comes out. I never completed Snake Eater, the only MGS game I haven't completed.

I'm so confused.
What about the other games that are out already? Why did they fragment everything so much? I thought they released like three in the last two years or something.

Don't play Portable Ops since it's not canon. One of the first lines in Peace Walker is the game telling you to forget about it
No matter how big the map is, there needs to be a ton of side-missions, collectables, and easter eggs to warrant my time to travel from one side of the map to the next.
Have you played GZ? There's a lot of stuff to collect and do. There's also a lot of side missions.

Parts of it are canon
Read about the three things that are considered canon and skip it. Peace Walker is an improved version of it.
What even is canon in PO? That Snake had friends?

Founding of Foxhound
I know Kojima doesn't consider Portable Ops to be cannon, but what is cannon from Peace Walker? The Metal Gears in that game are way more advanced than even Ray was. If everything in Peace Walker was cannon then it's kinda breaking the timeline.

the advanced robot maker guys from peace walker died and everyone else was too lazy to take their research notes. probably. that's what i keep telling myself, at least.

Everything that doesn't contradict established MGS lore/plot.

Everything is canon from Peace Walker.

-mountain dew, doritos, and axe body spray were all MSF-developed technology.
-big boss and kaz canonically had a big homoerotic brawl in mother base's sauna
-MSF used a giant crew-operated slingshot
-rathaloses exist in the MGS universe
-kaz and big boss have had sex in boxes several times
all canon

To be fair, this was referenced in GZ again, so I think you can safely say that this was indeed canon :v:
Yes, even when Snake fought those giant monsters. That was canon too.
for anyone who doesn't know what we're talking about

When I say "everything is canon" I'm clearly not referencing the jokes and gags requisite to every MGS title. Obviously Monster Hunter cross-pomotions are not part of the story.

Perhaps "everything" was bad wording on my end but whatever, the video should explain Kojima's position better than I can.
Founding of Foxhound
Foxhound is being founded in The Phantom Pain though.

How does PW break canon? there's AIs and nanomachines in the 90s and 80s within the MG universe
How does PW break canon? there's AIs and nanomachines in the 90s and 80s within the MG universe
I was mostly referring to the advanced technology of the metal gears specifically, making the timeline seem broken. Everything else is fine and I like Peace Walker a lot. I feel it is a very good Metal Gear title, but my only gripe is how some of the technology for that time period seems too advanced
because bb's crew somehow created [sp]an almost exact replica of rex[/sp] in the 1970s with ai better than any other thing in the series besides the patriots
I know its a dumb asspull theory, but Otacon DOES mention his "families dark past" in MGS1 and 2, so its possible he saw design notes on ZEKE that Huey had, and used it as his basis for his REX design.

It's so 1990's military, I love it.
Missing textures, models and broken animations does not depend on your computer, it depends on the emulation.
I'm quite happy for you to prove me wrong, but not a single person has managed to run MGS3 perfectly in an emulation thus far to my knowledge. Even the best attempts have pieces of the game broken.
My PC runs it just fine lmao

MGS3 is a main storyline canon but I don't see you claiming the monkeys aren't canon :v:

I like how this has just devolved into Metal Gear discussion now
Foxhound is being founded in The Phantom Pain though.
Miller brings up FOXHOUND in one of the briefing tapes in Peace Walker.
Is it going to be bad if i say i want to play this but i haven't played any other Metal Gear game?
How many people are going to crucify me at this moment?
