it may interact with the instruments of the plane
They say turn them off during takeoff and landing. Once you're at cruising altitude you can turn them back on. Although the FAA is considering changing it so you can have your phone on even during takeoff and landing. I mean, no one even follows that anyway.
How long before passengers are required to be gagged and blindfolded upon entering the terminal and then restrained to their seats by the flight attendants? I mean shit, I'll just build my own airplane and use phone on it the whole damn time, I'll keep my pocket knife on me too, not to mention I wouldn't have to pay their outrageous fees either.
it may interact with the instruments of the plane
Unless it can be demonstrated that electronic devices on an aircraft actually can 'interfere with it's instruments' then it's just a case of extreme caution being taken if not just flat out trying to find something to blame. Has this been observed to affect anything else? I don't worry about my phone being on while next to my computer while both are running, or while in a car, or anywhere else for that matter. The gear in my workshop would make these guys flip a shit for sure. Those reports are useless unless the interaction between the aircraft and the device was tested and verified, otherwise it's easy to blame malfunctioning equipment on a passenger's electronic device. Like, did they take that DVD player up in the cockpit and turn it on and off to see if it would actually have an effect on command to be sure it wasn't coincidence or something? Worst thing I've ever seen happen is the phone's signal pops up in my speakers when I set the phone down next to them, that could be a problem for communications on an aircraft sure, if one of the flight crew decides to drop a phone onto their intercom or radio.
