Jurassic World just had the biggest Friday opening in box office history

I thought the movie was fucking awesome and I teared up several times. It's the best movie I've seen in years.
The scenes with the mosasaurus was the best thing, I could've sat through 2 hours of watching just that. :v:

I don't know if all the Dinosaurs are CGI in Jurassic world, but nothing in the trailers looked as real as the original movie.
JP1's CGI will probably be heralded as some of the best for it's time and even years after. The CGI in the original has held up extraordinarily well and definitely even outdoes the CGI in the later movies and even this one.
But I don't think anyone making this movie wasn't completely aware of that. This movie was never made to be better than the original, I don't think. It was just to expand on the franchise and bring back a world/fictional setting that a lot of people grew up with and remember loving but with a modern twist.
I think it's great for what it is. But if you try and compare it to the original in any way, shape, or form, it'll always fall flat.

The CGI in the original is actually really dated now and looks a million times worse than movies today. if you wan't proof just look at the opening scene with the long necked dinosaurs.
The reason why OTHER dinosaurs in the original looked so good is because it was practical effects
I dunno. Watching the original, I feel like they blend in with the given environment more than the newer CGI dinos do.
Might just be personal opinion though. I still think the original's effects look great.
I went into Jurassic World expecting a popcorn flick about both dinosaurs fighting each other/eating humans, and catering to my 5-year old, dinosaur-loving self. I got exactly what I wanted and loved every minute of it. Was the ending fight dumb? Yep. Didn't make it any less satisfying for me.

Probably, I thought the Trex looked amazing but that's because it was actually a big animatronic supplemented with CGI.
The Trex in the ending when the banner is falling though... not so good.

I just watched the first one literally two hours ago, and really, it's only the long-necked motherfuckers that look like crap, every other dinosaur in it still holds up. The long necked ones just have too long, lingering shots and not advanced enough texture-shading and such to look good, where other CGI-shots, while noticeably different from the practicals, look fully up-to-date still.

Really, the most dated thing about JP1 is the chick's outfit and how computer-hacking work.
The thing with all those "it was ok what do you expect" posts in here is: is that really what should create the biggest friday box office opening ever?
Is that the level of quality?

It's not the quality that brought in the money, it's the franchise and the fans of said franchise.
These sorts of series have fans of all types who aren't so concerned with a good story or good effects, they really just wanna see giant dinosaurs tear the shit out of some shit. And that's what this movie provided. Sort of similar thing with Godzilla? I don't think anyone went to go see that for the story. You went for the big monsters.
Not that I'm saying it's an excuse for BAD quality or story, but I'm just saying is that it's the fans that brought their families and their kids that brought in the money.

but it's a unix system!

And I'm not saying that. I am aware of the status quo. I'm questioning the "I'm kind of satisfied" opinions that make this possible.

That's hype for ya. I mean, all those Call of Duty sequels sell pretty well too.
Still waiting for the day David Krentz can manage to pull off a movie without the executives deciding the heads are too big or the Dinosaurs need to talk.
Better yet, just get Laika and Phil Tippett together and let em do a feature length Prehistoric Beast.

Well I mean. People don't usually form the opinion until after they go and see the movie so by then they'll have paid for the ticket anyway.
And I doubt the "it's okay" opinions will sway the die hard fans to not go see it.
I think the fanbase is just large enough to pull in all that income, regardless.

Yeah but why? We all knew how all over the place 2 and how shit 3 were. Why is the fanbase not sceptical? Are those few years really enough to make us forget that? Is the lesson basically that reboots/homages live off the positive reinforcement of memories?
I guess these are rhetoric questions.
Even though 2 and 3 are shit I still love them. I mean I can acknowledge they were garbage but that doesn't mean I'm not gonna watch it lol. Might be the general idea behind it all.
Even if it's garbage, it can still be fun to watch.

We'll be asking this same question in another 5 years when Jurassic Universe opens up. It'll have Chris Pratt in space with dinosaurs. You're essentially combining the appeal of Jurrasic Park with Guardians of the Galaxy.
Box Office hit of 2020!!!

yeah, i think people praise it way too much. it was ahead of its time, it was better than most CGI used in that entire decade even, but to say it holds up to today's standards is just nostalgia clouding your judgement

The special effects hold up extremely well in other scenes (Not sure how much of this scene is CGI) and the raptor scene is still one of the most tense moments in Jurrasic Park. That's movie magic.
I loved the movie, but one scene annoyed me a little. [sp]The part where you seen all the brachiosaurs lying dead in the green field felt like it was shitting on the scene posted above.[/sp]

The Raptors in the kitchen scene were actors in some really really well done suits actually, the arms, eyes and I THINK the jaw were radio controlled.
The head was moved around by a rod in the suit.
Minimal CGI was used and when it is you can tell because there's a significant decrease in quality in the Raptors
The most prevalent CGI in that scene is the removal of the sets crew from the reflective objects. :v:

Movies need to focus more on practical effects, the technology for us to completely rely on CGI just isn't ready yet.

there's obviously cgi in that scene as well but i'm not sure if they alternate between costumes and full on computer effects, or if they blend the two together in some scenes

Thank you! That's an awesome video.
CGI has it's place; but when something can be done with real effects by people who are passionate about their craft; well an Audience can feel it too.
I wish I was mechanically inclined/talented...
_fuck_
I loved the first one, hated the two sequels and had a great time with Jurassic World. Trevorrow did a good job with it.
It was so enjoyable. Very suspenseful with some very good sequences. Opposed to others I loved some of the cheesiness it had.
1>4>2>3
This would explain why my job has been absolute hell for the past 3 days.
On the bad side of working at a movie theatre as a projectionist, lot's of fucking work and being swapped around department wise and huge amounts of people. On the plus side, i'm getting some serious bank and im catching this movie as soon as im done tomorrow for free.
I seriously can't wait to see this i mean dinosaurs are p sweet and chris pratt is p sweet. That's like pp sweet.
While I loved the movie, I was disappointed by the lack of animatronics. The raptor animatronics were there, but they were CGI-ed over to give them facial expressions like a real raptor (which could be done visually, I saw no need to cgi the faces). I don't know why there couldn't just do the whole facial expression they did with the first film, or just people are use to CGI additions nowadays. Beats me
I have my gripes, and that car commercial part, but overall it was p. good.
It was a fun movie, but I laughed when at one point this happened:
"Now do you want to see something really cool?"
*cut to close up of nice car pulling up, logo dead center*
I can't wait for Jurassic world to come out on Google Play so I can buy it I think I'll enjoy it just like I did the first one it seems like a lot of you really over analyze movies so I'm guessing for somebody that doesn't overanalyze movies they should enjoy it just like the first one. The others were really good too but the first one was the best.
Yeah but why? We all knew how all over the place 2 and how shit 3 were. Why is the fanbase not sceptical? Are those few years really enough to make us forget that? Is the lesson basically that reboots/homages live off the positive reinforcement of memories?

TBH, for me, it's the chance to revisit the Jurassic universe. As long as it's not terrible, it's all good.
Same reason why I love The Hobbit, really. Not as good as LOTR, but damnit I won't deny myself the last films that will probably ever be set in the Tolkienverse.
