Do you ever use it though?
Swipe and sign is such a outdated and insecure method of payment, I'm still amazed the US still fucking uses it. Its so rare to find a US card with a chip on it even though they are trying to introduce chip and pin.
Hell if you come to europe some of the cards we issue don't even have a magnetic strip anymore.
EMV liability is kicking in starting in october

It's required to have a chipped card by 2017 in the US IIRC

Well at least they're updating PCI compliance in October to be a little bit more secure. You're the only one that's supposed to be handling your card for the update, no one is to take it from you to swipe it, even if they're right in front of you.
Tipping should be outlawed
Tipping should be outlawed
That's a little excessive.

all of the US cards have the chip
and many systems in the US require a pin. just in combination with the magstrip, rather than the chip (which makes little sense in 2015)
really the only times where you don't require a pin are in a restaraunt or with smaller stores
when i went to CVS, shaws, various train station booths in the US i had to use my PIN to verify the transaction
heck, in the UK you can use the magstrip and signature if you want to. i've had to several times
the only time you really need to use chip and pin in the UK is at an ATM lol

besides the ridiculous tipping culture enforced by law, one thing that really irks me in the US is the commodity of tax not being included before purchase. gets really annoying
How is this news ? Should we start reporting everyones feeling getting hurt ?

I've never, had to use the magstrip on any of my cards since getting them, its practically phased out.
The only card I have that actually only has a magstrip is a eurobonus flight card and even then I've never used it, it's just there to be a physical entity to my online point collecting which I spend online.

i got a new card about a month and a half ago, still no chip

Very very few places in the US actually require a pin for credit card transactions, only debit card.
It's required to have a chipped card by 2017 in the US IIRC
"October 1, 2015 – Counterfeit Card Liability Shift. The party that has made investment in EMV deployment is protected from financial liability for card-present counterfeit fraud losses on this date. If neither or both parties are EMV compliant, the fraud liability remains the same as it is today. This date excludes automated fuel dispensers."
fuel dispensers are following the same liability shift in 2017 (replacing an entire pump is a lot harder then swapping terminals)

oooh, that would explain why i kept getting asked for my PIN
well then the situation is much worse than i thought. i spent a couple weeks in canada a week before going to the US and CA has everything so much more up to date than the US

Yeah, sadly outside of a lot of larger cities it's very rare I even get prompted for my pin with my debit card.
It's a concept that seems to work fine outside of the US, so.
Yeah, well, something something European/Scandinavian success is just temporary something conservative salt
So? My friend wrote "fuck you" on a tip.
That's probably worse
If my dad ever got shit service, he would put a penny in a glass of water, use the menu to flip the glass without spilling it, and then place it on the table and pull the menu out.
What is proper tip % on a 112$ bill? I wouldn't tip anything higher than $10
If my dad ever got shit service, he would put a penny in a glass of water, use the menu to flip the glass without spilling it, and then place it on the table and pull the menu out.
That's just rude. I was taught to at least leave a decent tip's worth of change in the glass.

is it weird that your dad does things that a middleschooler would do?
Do you try to ignore it?
And how many places do you know that actually reinforce that? None. Mine don't. If I walk out with $10 in tips and get a $50 paycheck... I just have to have $60 last me the week.
Not the customer's fault or problem.
What is proper tip % on a 112$ bill? I wouldn't tip anything higher than $10
depends on where you go. tip is assumed after 6 people in most places and it can be anywhere from like 7% to 20%.
depends on where you go. tip is assumed after 6 people in most places and it can be anywhere from like 7% to 20%.
I swear to god if we had a $100+ bill and the restaurant automatically took 15% of that I'd be livid. Wouldn't eat there again
Can places just pay their workers good wages instead of relying on tips?
It seems like an archaic practice leftover from the middle ages when nobles gave their servants scraps for good behavior.
Yes, it's news-worthy. People that do what these customers did are pricks and need to be called out on it.
So you're saying this should be the total sum of content on every news site and channel for all eternity? BEcause I can guarantee you that someone somewhere in the US is as I type this, as you read it, being a dick to the wait staff. It's a country of 320+ million people, some of them are assholes, and assholes still need food.
whats great about this is in her facebook post she complains about only receiving pay of $2.50/ an hour and that some of her paychecks are less than pocket change, but the federal government forces your employer to make up the difference if you dont make minimum wage from tips. what a shitty way to spread misinformation, but i guess anything to help support your position right?
Supposed to do and actually do are entirely different things. Scummy restaurant owners will find loopholes in the law to avoid paying the difference. That's the corporate mentality. The company I work for makes us burn off our overtime by sitting in the breakroom and not clocking in on friday so we technically never work more than 80 hours over our checks(biweekly). They'll still pay it if you give them no choice but they aren't happy about it.

If the waiters do not make minim wage over the combined working hours + tip, then the company must foot the bill for that. Generally waiters make well over minimum wage, some can pull in a large amount depending on location of where you work.

you are stupid for working a job that isn't paying you what they are legally obligated to and you should have sued them :-)
I don't think I've ever tipped for a meal in the UK
