There's plenty of water in Japan right now. Though how come can't they just lower the control rods?
I know enough to know that if you flush the water and lower the control rods completely, the reaction can be easily slowed to a safe level.
The security system malfunctioned, I think. Taking them out would be as bad as having a meltdown, since the rods are highly radioactive.
let's drop a nuclear bomb on it to minimize the damage
Although I doubt this is a serious question, the rods will be too hot for the water to cool. Also, taking them out the containers wouldn't be a smart move.
Carbon doesn't sublime until 5800K. If you keep flushing the water (Which is going to produce a shittonne of nuclear waste) you can easily prevent a meltdown.
The security system malfunctioned, I think. Taking them out would be as bad as having a meltdown, since the rods are highly radioactive.
I'm not suggesting removing the control rods. That's a recipe for a full-on meltdown. Simply lower the rods to their maximum depth, and then start a water flow so as the water can cool down.
Obama did it
tl;dr = earthquakes have probably destroyed the cooling rods, therefore the graphite can't be lowered, the chain reaction is continuing and will keep doing so until it heats up enough to melt its casing.
Can't just shove water on it.
"If they can't restore power to the plant (and cool the reactor),
If this is the case, couldn't they take a helicopter and fly in a generator to power the pumps?

Throwing coolant at it and hoping for the best is on of the reasons why Chernobyl exploded and dropping the control rods in wont cool it down although it will slow the reaction down so less heat is produced. It's a very delicate operation.

Slowing the reaction is exactly the effect you want.

Except they can't, some of the plant isn't recieving power. (:irony:)
If this is the case, couldn't they take a helicopter and fly in a generator to power the pumps?
that's exactly what they're doing
Bitches don't know about meltdown proof Thorium reactors.
Except they can't, some of the plant isn't recieving power. (:irony:)
Ah. That explains that a lot better.
High School Chemistry
physics
chemistry deals with electron transfer, this is to do with the nucleus
I'm imagining the repercussions that would happen with a meltdown and the amount of ammunition Greenpeace or the Green movement will have is staggering.

Fuckin greenpeace man. Keeping the nuclear power industry down. They'd rather pump assloads of CO2 into the atmosphere than to actually use a good source of energy.

no, chernobyl npp exploded because the people working there were incompetent and ran tests without knowing what the fuck they were doing

The current adult population grew up being told to have a complete and utter fear of anything nuclear, luckily the more recent generations seem more nuclear-friendly.
Of course, that's all anecdotal, I wonder if they've done studies about it.
no, chernobyl npp exploded because the people working there were incompetent and ran tests without knowing what the fuck they were doing
That's true, but they were also denied knowledge of previous nuclear accidents in the Soviet Union and information about flaws in the RBMK type reactor that they were using (the graphite control rod tips causing a power surge when suddenly inserted into the core)

And put coolant though a reactor that was hot enough to split it into H2 and O2 which exploded, yes.

This is going to fucking ruin all the progress we've made since then if it melts down

The thing I'm pissed off about is how politicized science has become.
Nuclear reactors, Global Warming, Stem cells, genetic engineering/modification, these things have become political stances, they've bastardized science into something it should never have been in the first place.

Amen.

Depends how deep down the rabbit hole you go. Chemistry and Physics become closer the further along the line you go.
Get out of here, ralker

This is also true, and it's fucking terrible that the decisions concerning them are often made by people who know nothing about them.
[editline]11th March 2011[/editline]
Also that people aren't science-literate enough to take a meaningful, well-informed stance on them.
Except they can't, some of the plant isn't recieving power. (:irony:)
They should fire the plant up then
Get out of here, ralker
That was absolutely horrible. I mean, make an effort.
They should fire the plant up then
So how're you planning to collect the power generated by the out of control reaction to power the method to control the reaction which in turn will prevent you from controlling the reaction?

I think he was joking
Is this a modern NPP? Shouldn't it automatically shut down in the face of a meltdown?
