• Japan struggling to cool down nuclear reactor
Carbon doesn't sublime until 5800K. If you keep flushing the water (Which is going to produce a shittonne of nuclear waste) you can easily prevent a meltdown. I'm not suggesting removing the control rods. That's a recipe for a full-on meltdown. Simply lower the rods to their maximum depth, and then start a water flow so as the water can cool down.
It's not really the heat that's the worrying part, it's the possibility of the chain reaction going out of control.
Is this a modern NPP? Shouldn't it automatically shut down in the face of a meltdown?
it wasn't designed with an 8.9 earthquake in mind
Is this a modern NPP? Shouldn't it automatically shut down in the face of a meltdown?
That's what I thought. All of the other nuclear power plants did exactly that, just this one had BOTH its backup power systems taken out by the earthquake and then the tsunami.
Is this a modern NPP? Shouldn't it automatically shut down in the face of a meltdown?
The earthquake could have damaged the systems, or the Japanese aren't very good with nuclears safety.
If they save the day, there'll be a movie on this someday.
That reactor looks like it's gonna go prompt critical soon enough.
That reactor looks like it's gonna go prompt critical soon enough.
I'm sure you can tell
If they save the day, there'll be a movie on this someday.
And 5 movies if they don't. Such is Hollywood.
And 5 movies if they don't. Such is Hollywood.
Nah, there'll only be movies if they succeed because the USA was directly involved in trying to shut the plant down. Such is Hollywood.
Why don't they just pull the plug, Japanese are so stupid.
If they save the day, there'll be a movie on this someday.
I wouldn't say a movie, maybe a channel 4 documentary
I'm sure you can tell
I was just guessing actually, but since japan is get screwed over more and more today, there's not much evidence that the situation is going to get better. So I can only expect the worst.
Oh dear! Gordon, get away from the- Shutting down-no, attempted shutdown. It's not-it's not, it's not shutting down!
Why don't they just pull the plug, Japanese are so stupid.
Because Uranium rods that will continue decaying for millions of years can stop with the flick of a switch.
I wouldn't say a movie, maybe a channel 4 documentary
nonsense, we'll cast Morgan Freeman as the president of Japan and Megan Fox will deliver the coolant with the aid of her awkward stalker who she falls in love with due to the traumatic event. Instant hit. they break up in the beginning of the sequel, oh noes
Why don't they just pull the plug, Japanese are so stupid.
You'd best be trollin'
I'm imagining the repercussions that would happen with a meltdown and the amount of ammunition Greenpeace or the Green movement will have is staggering.
Greenpeace can go shove it.
I swear, this Earthquake is probably the worst I've seen to affect a 1st World Nation my entire life. Which isn't all that long, but still.
The way reactors are controlled is by slowing the chain reaction not accelerating it. So if you said "pull the plug" it would mean you let the chain reaction free.
Because Uranium rods that will continue decaying for millions of years can stop with the flick of a switch.
I think he was being sarcastic.
This is why you don't give nuclear reactor's to the chinese.
This is why you don't give nuclear reactor's to the chinese.
While your trolling WOULD be funny if this happened like a month ago, it isn't now.
This is why you don't give nuclear reactor's to the chinese.
Thank god they're Japanese
I think he was joking
of course I wasn't power goes at the speed of power but heat only goes at the speed of heat so if you turn the plant on the power will reach the hot things before the heat does and the cooling will start I know my shit man I don't joke
of course I wasn't power goes at the speed of power but heat only goes at the speed of heat so if you turn the plant on the power will reach the hot things before the heat does and the cooling will start I know my shit man I don't joke
This post confuses me and my logical thinking.
This post confuses me and my logical thinking.
There's nothing illogical about his post, actually. Just every single premise is false.
of course I wasn't power goes at the speed of power but heat only goes at the speed of heat so if you turn the plant on the power will reach the hot things before the heat does and the cooling will start I know my shit man I don't joke
The power will reach the coolers first, but they won't be able to cool at the same rate at the heat will rise for a while. So for some time there'd be a net gain in heat, possibly enough to melt through containment and be a meltdown.

[editline]11th March 2011[/editline] Zeke reminds me of Mr. Fantastic from Helios One in Fallout New Vegas. [editline]11th March 2011[/editline] Avatar fits PERFECTLY.
He's still joking.
Zeke never jokes.
I have full confidence in Japan's nuclear and materials engineering experts. Nah just kidding, I'm trying to convince myself it's okay that I can't enter my fallout shelter because the walls are lined with asbestos.
