Know what, fuck this, I'm going to sleep. There's literally nothing I can do about it and neither can anyone here. Good night everyone.
Know what, fuck this, I'm going to sleep. There's literally nothing I can do about it and neither can anyone here. Good night everyone.
I can't do anything about it either. I might as well do my English homework.
Okay, after some reading, it seems the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation at Earth-surface is about 0.05 sieverts per year. Divide by 365, and the daily radiation dose is 137 microsieverts, so at x1000 levels that would be 0.137 Sv. And according to Wikipedia, that would mean it will take several days before anybody accumulates deadly dose. Thank God for science!
Why does the reactor continue to heat up even after it is off?
Nuclear fission is still going. It is hard to stop the reaction, you can just drop the control rods and pray for the best.
Don't the have that failsafe that floods the reactor with coated glass beads?
Apparently they've lost control of five reactors across the country.
Exactly why does one build a four-core nuclear power plant at the very edge of an ocean that is so prone to tsunamis it's ridiculous? Then again, further inland may be worse due to the quakes.
The main reactor loop is closed but the steam side can be fed regular water. Being right beside the ocean provided a lot of seawater. Also, they can still manually open valves and release steam if need be. They will not under any reason allow the plant to explode. The risks behind releasing radioactive steam is much less than jsut running and quite possibly watching everything go pop. Also, there was a nuclear steam release at three-mile island as well. I would again like to remind people that it's not as bad as it sounds.
Kakizaki said officials have confirmed that the emergency cooling system — the last-ditch cooling measure to prevent the reactor from the meltdown — is intact and could kick in if needed.
That's probably the neutron absorbing mix I was referring to a few pages back. You inject that, you totally stop the residual reaction and slowly the system will cool off however you won't be able to operate the reactor again.
All of this shit happening in Japan reminds me of one of those pasta things that has a story (in this case it was long, and more of a timeline) that sounds really cool and right at the end it drops a hint that links it to a game or tv show or something. In this case, the timeline of events leading to the creation of Pokemon where it ended with "Ash Ketchum is born" Anyone have that? I've been looking for ages.
The problem is the steam and the resulting pressure I think.
Just hopefully the coolant water isn't too hot as well. That's what caused Chernobyl.

Reactor one is starting to vent air :tinfoil:

Wait what the telly just said that they're releasing the radioactive air/steam as of 9:00AM local time [editline]etf[/editline] :ninja:
Jesus Christ. http://www.bungie.net/Forums/posts.aspx?postID=44335368
Wait so according to this Pokémon were created by some teleporting technology and Mew was the first? Uh yeah, about that cat...
Wait what the telly just said that they're releasing the radioactive air/steam as of 9:00AM local time [editline]etf[/editline] :ninja:
I'm going to bet that the radiation released is going to be about as much as Three Mile Island - enough that the health risks are only statistical. You might see a few percentage points more cancer in the area over the next few decades, but you won't see another Chernobyl.

They are extending the evacuation radius for reactor 1 and probably going to do the same for reactor 2
They are extending the evacuation radius for reactor 1 and probably going to do the same for reactor 2
Everytime someone posts, I seriously hope for good news. I don't want anything bad to happen.
-snip- Fuck wrong thread.
This is just what we need. More bad rap for nuclear reactors. Nevermind that there's only been two recorded nuclear disasters in the entire life of nuclear power, they're BAD. Huh what's that? Cars result in the death of tens of thousands of people yearly? No, cars aren't bad what are you talking about.
Everytime someone posts, I seriously hope for good news. I don't want anything bad to happen.
It is going to get worse before it gets better.
Just like a woman's first time :v:
Throwing coolant at it and hoping for the best is on of the reasons why Chernobyl exploded and dropping the control rods in wont cool it down although it will slow the reaction down so less heat is produced. It's a very delicate operation.
Except in chernobyl they were unable to drop in the control rods again because they heated up too much and then they got stuck because of heat expansion.
It is going to get worse before it gets better.
Well then fuck it. I'm going to bed now and if I wake up with an extra arm, damm you for giving these negatives waves man.
Except in chernobyl they were unable to drop in the control rods again because they heated up too much and then they got stuck because of heat expansion.
Chernobyl was just a massive clusterfuck. About a dozen severe fuckups in a chain-reaction of fuck. Pretty much everyone involved in designing or running the thing was grossly incompetent. From what I can tell, the staff at this plant know their stuff. Everything that's gone wrong has been caused by something unpreventable (the earthquake/tsunami), and they've been controlling the damage pretty well. Hopefully, they get it completely under control soon.
And the venting is starting.
Found something interesting: http://www.tepco.co.jp/nu/f1-np/camera/index-j.html (May take a while to load - it's obviously getting a lot more hits than usual) It's a webcam feed showing the plant in question. Updates hourly, so you won't actually see any motion, but it's good to note that the plant isn't on fire (like I heard elsewhere), and that there's no damage to the cooling towers.
