I don't hate this. :v:
It's not much different from CD-keys on the PC...If you buy a used copy and the key's already linked to an account, then you just gotta buy a new key.

What if I want to let my friend try this awesome game I got?
Now I need to let him use my account for a few weeks over at his house.
Only reason you don't hate it is cause you're already used to it.
I rarely buy used games anyway, but this is stupid

Well, he can play single player.
Uncharted 3 better not have this. So far I haven't bought a game with an online pass.
... it's still free. If you buy a game new, it comes with a pass. If you buy it used, you have to buy a single use registration code to be able to play online. This has nothing to do with a monthly charge.
It's gonna suck ass though for people who buy games used or use rental services like Gamefly
basically what all 360 owners have to do to used games by buying the pass online
What? No they don't.
Holy shit. Everywhere this gets brought up a wave of incredible stupidity.
Buy the game new, no problem - you can play online.
Buy the game used, the developer isn't making money off of their game, you pay $10 if you want to play online
Buy the game used for $50<, then fucking deal with it and buy the god damn $10 pass you cheap bastard.
For those of you thinking it's like Live, you don't have to pay extra for it.
Also what's so bad about this? We've seen the exact same thing with PC games for the last what, 10 years? What's so different now? Why is this such an outrage now?
Because hating corporations is the cool thing to do now.
It's gonna suck ass though for people who buy games used or use rental services like Gamefly
Mortal Kombat has an online trial you can use for like 5 days or something. I'm sure games will adopt that same idea.
Uncharted 3 better not have this. So far I haven't bought a game with an online pass.
it will, uncharted is published by sony
just buy it new, it will come with the code
I'm ok with this
snip-
Guys, games already do this it isn't new.
And those games sell the passes on PSN if you got a used one.
Calm the fuck down.
Used sucks to me anyways, my Gamecube wouldn't be broken if used games didn't exist.
CD Keys are basically the reason why the PC doesn't have a used games market. Sony and EA only want to add this sort of protection to consoles. Their online pass is basically just a console CD Key, aimed at killing used sales. I don't really care for used sales. Rentals are nice, and since many developers or publishers don't release demos it's sometimes the only way to tell if you like a game, same with piracy. I've bought a few used games in the past and to be honest they were older games that had a reduced price, games like RFG and BC1. It's usually much more worth it to buy a game new anyway.
In other news, Sony users shocked to find they're being held to the same responsibilities as PC gamers, more at 11.
