And we will never have. We will always have majorities and minorities, it's in our nature.
Gender norms are such a big part of our life that they won't be gone... ever. They are literally everywhere.
Why do girls have long hair more often then boys? Oh, gender roles. We should probably shave everyone to 3mm just so we are all equal.
Why do women wear short skirts and men dont? Gender roles, I can't even wear a skirt without being bullied by the majority for it. Cruel world.
Why do women use lipstick and men most often don't? [sp]Maybe because the lipstick mimics the biological effect of being aroused - blood flowing to lips, making them red - and naturally attracts males[/sp] Society-enforced gender roles!
A world without genders is totally not a world of humans. Not possible with homo sapiens.
nigga everyone's talking about eliminating social restrictions, which is the exact opposite of what you're talking about
nobody's gonna force everyone to shave their hair or force you to wear a skirt, the point is to let people be themselves as long as it doesn't negatively affect others, and you're not gonna fucking tell me you're against self expression and uniqueness (if you wanna see what happens if someone tries to eliminate these just go, oh, 30 or so years back)
gender roles are basically limiting everyone who wants to go outside the box they're in. I'm not saying that people who are perfectly happy to stay inside that box are doing anything wrong - but if they ignore the people who want to go out, who don't quite feel they fit in, who just want to express themselves to the world the way they are, that's just an extreme fuck you got mine attitude.
I'm saying that as a straight, cis dude who loves guns, explosions, terrible action movies - but also playing the sims, pastel colors, 80s pop music, ballads and all that other sappy romantic shit.

I didn't even read this post, but I should have.
Your view of human history is pretty limited I'm guessing because if it wasn't, you'd know there's examples of every one of those examples you made, going in either direction.
Sumerian Egyptian and Scot men historically wore kilts/skirts.
A large variety of societies had men who more than on occasion used forms of make up.
There's plenty of examples of hair being worn in every imaginable style of hair.
Please, if you're going to make stupid claims about humanity in general, do your best to know about humanities general history which you obviously do not.

Hell, it's primarily only western societies that decided to make the skirt a female-only thing.

lol no it isn't. It's simply a suggestion. It's not in any way saying 'Only boys should play with these' or 'Girls should go buy an MLP doll'. It's simply suggesting that a superhero toy would be a good gift for one.
Everyone needs to stop spazzing out and overreacting about this. This whole situation is a great example of why modern society is going nowhere. It's too focused on getting offended by innocent suggestions to solve any of the real problems facing it. Earth's not gonna be able to support us for much longer, we should be looking to colonizing space and curing several nasty diseases, but nooooooooo, a store in Britian put a sign up suggesting boys might like a superhero toy. STOP THE MOTHER FUCKING PRESSES WE HAVE A SITUATION HERE! /s

Pretty much all gender roles are just suggestions, so this is saying nothing.

I think you're the only one overreacting here. People wanting things to improve, even in small ways, aren't necessarily offended or trying to make a situation out of nothing. No one here seems to be particularly upset at how toy stores categorize toys, they just see it as better if they don't segregate toys by intended gender.

It's not like we're dedicating top scientists to figuring out how to remove a sign in a store. We're allowed to work on multiple things at once. This isn't fucking Civ 5 where you can only research one thing at a time. You can have scientists building rockets and store clerks taking down a piece of paper at the same time.

Yes, to put it bluntly, the potential demise of earth due to climate change is more severe of a problem than gender roles. But it's not like we can solve one or the other and thinking it's just not a problem at all is totally ignorant
What is right though?

I would assume that causing harm would not be right. So, basically: not causing harm.
You have no examples for why it's either good or bad. We have examples for why it's bad.
Unless if you provide an example for why it's good or why our suggestion is worse, I'm just going to take it that our side is right.
Strawman arguments for our side such as "well if we don't have gender roles then everyone is going to be forcibly shaved" don't count as points against us.

The argument that we should stop questioning something because "hey look see unrelated issue, why don't we talk about it" is tired and ineffective. There are about 7 billion people on this planet. We can tackle environmental issues and societal issues at the same time.

What an astoundingly stupid post. Not only are you the only one making this into that big a deal, but humanity can easily work on two things at once. Hell, the people who would be fighting social injustice aren't even the same people who would be researching space colonization.
Personally I hope she wins this case because gendered products are dumb in the first place but they really are taken way too far

To be fair from a business standpoint you actually need to separate products by gender even when they're basically the same product because it substantially boosts sales.
See how Dove had to redesign their products to actually get a male consumer base.

That's a result of gender norms though, not a reason to keep them. TBH tho redesigning their products was mostly just giving the box a simple black and red gradient instead of a pink/white flowery one and I'm pretty sure there could be women who prefer the men style one's appearance too (and vice versa)

Gender specific products are not where you are going to change or fight gender norms in any significant way.
Also if something as dumb as making a product less round and giving it a square package actually boosts your sales significantly then maybe gender norms don't have all that much to do with it.
It depends on the product really. A guy working in retail told me that men's razors are made different than women's razors because of the hair typically shaved on a guy vs a girl (beard vs legs and everything else).
So you've got products that actually are designed differently and products that are just pink rather than blue.
Personally if I owned a personal product producing company (for the kind of products that really don't vary for women or men), I'd slap a plastic dick and tits over the different gender "versions" and tell people that that's the only difference between the two packages; One has a dick on it, and the other has tits.
Gender specific products are not where you are going to change or fight gender norms in any significant way.
Totally wrong, as many people have lives that revolve around the products they own and use for day-to-day tasks
Also if something as dumb as making a product less round and giving it a square package actually boosts your sales significantly then maybe gender norms don't have all that much to do with it.
False again, it likely has everything to do with gender norms. ie most truckers wouldn't be caught dead driving a truck with a paintjob all pink and covered in flowers, it's pretty common sense what it's related to

Even if it were an evolutionary product, saying it's right for someone to be treated differently because of their gender is a type of appeal to nature fallacy.

Evolution and biology has no standing in discussion of modern gender roles. "Women should stay in the home, it's their place" is misogyny, pure and simple. "But it's rooted in biology!" makes it even worse, it reeks of "biotruths" nonsense.
Even if it is rooted in biology and evolution, it doesn't matter, because it's 2014 and you can (or at least you should be able to) be whoever you want. Who the fuck cares if cavemen 5 millenia ago kept their women in caves and the men went out and hunted? Their world is completely different from ours.

It's a common stereotype linked to gender roles that women are bad at math.
Why would that be the case? How would that evolve? Especially since in the classic "men hunt, women farm" scenario, the women would be the ones figuring out how much to plant, how much to harvest, how much food they'll need for each night and how to spread it among people, etc. Same with science such as chemistry: if women were the only ones cooking, then that's much closer to chemistry than hunting is. On the other hand, if you turn around and say they weren't the only ones cooking, then oh hey, turns out the scenario people base their biotruths on is bullshit!
Which is more likely:
-men and women evolved to be good at math and bad at math respectively, despite it being more likely to evolve the other way around (and furthermore, women evolving to be less interested in computers somehow, because that's also a common stereotype of "women just aren't interested in computers")
-men did the hunting and women did the cooking, but the men came back every hour or so just to do the math and "more chemistry related" cooking for some reason
-men came to power due to being physically stronger than women on average, the people in charge who had superiority complexes said that men were smarter than women, and math and science were associated with being smart, so society decided men must be better at math and science

ten thousand years ago it was strong man who make win because he could push rock and club deer and find berry.
but now we live in a society where labor is divided and work is made much easier by the use of tools and machinery.
the principles that mattered when we were hunter-gatherers finding berries and spearing mammoths mean nothing in the industrial economies we live in today, and even living an agrarian lifestyle requires less physical strength.
How about like a masculine toy section and a feminine toy section (or something like that).
All that's doing is using fancier words for the same thing.
It's like "instead of 'white' and 'colored' drinking fountains, let's have 'caucasian' and 'negroid'".
Obviously much less extreme than that, though.
This is a thing, for a very good reason. Children have been fed that "boys play with boy toys, and girls play with girl toys" bullshit since the advent of fucking toys. Many parents are bull-headed over that. . .working in fast food, I often saw a little boy crying because he wanted a Beanie Baby kids' meal, but wound up chastised by his father. "NO. You're getting the Hot Wheels meal, or you get nothing. I didn't raise a GIRL."
The enforcement of gender roles can be a very hurtful thing for children, making them feel as if there's something wrong with them for wanting something outside of the norm. This isn't social justice warrior bullshit. . .this is something that has a real impact on children, and the way they're taught to see the world.
