you got: undead nightmare for rdr skyrim dlc oblivion dlc saints row the third season pass is a small expansion bf3 premium is essentially an expansion gtaiv dlcs all off the top of my head, also, keep in mind, the cost to develop a game and game content has gotten waaaaay higher than it used to be it is a huge risk to develop a big expansion pack, hell, rockstar even said they can't afford to keep making the expansions for their games, as the turnout was much less than they intended to get
+ fallout 3 and fallout: nv dlc
Virtually everyone is doing it these days. Valve and the hat stores, ActivisionBlizzard and the DiabloIII real money auction house, EA and Battlefield3's premium service. Etc etc etc.
You can still get hats from drops even if you're a F2P. The rest are examples that fit under the article.. [editline]19th July 2012[/editline]
Yeah but now DLC is for tiny useless shit, I'm talking about giant expansion packs that were pretty much a whole new game, like this one: [t]http://media.giantbomb.com/uploads/0/5327/222041-soaked__large.jpg[/t]
That gave you more waterpark-themed attractions, right? By your logic, so are Sims 2 packs "expansions" because they give you animals, wizardry, etc. all of which expand on the gameplay: simulating a family, except now you can have wizards keeping your shitty dog alive.
Killing Floor has a good model for DLCs. All game changing stuff such as new maps, new weapons and the special events are free for everyone but the bonus cosmetic character packs are like a £1 a pack so that people can support the developers and get bonus stuff out of it that doesn't give them any advantage over people who don't buy the DLCs.
Why does EA come to mind immediately after reading this?
I was going to ask the same thing. This article is correct though because I've already boycotted EA, this being one of the major reasons, along with other companies who are now running on that model. It sucks, because I like Dead Space, but not enough to support EA.
So? They are still new maps released completely for free. Jesus christ so fucking stupid that idiots still fucking complain about shit even though its completely free and adds just plain MORE to the game, they even changed the ending for whiny bitches, and they did it for free, but people are still cunts. [editline]18th July 2012[/editline] Also holy shit, when Activision releases reused assets for actual money, people get up in arms, but when someone releases it for free...people still get mad? Fuck off, damn.
They didn't change the ending at all in ANY way. A slideshow with images that are slightly different each time with a voice over explaining what anyone could've guessed would happen is not changing an ending. You might be able to settle for lazy as fuck developers but most people me included know for a fact that kind of work ethic is going to make trends get worse and worse. Ideally what devs need to do instead of churning out these maps is give us fucking mod tools. That helps create a backbone for your community to work off and subsequently you will not even need to rush out re-hashed DLC because people are injecting life into the product themselves which then gives devs more time to actually pool resources and focus on some solid DLC.

CD Projekt are for sure the best devs around. They sell great games at a normal price, even though the box is full of goodies and better than many so called collector editions, they run a digital distribution service with absolutely no DRM and they listen to the community even if it means stopping anti-piracy measures.
Also it's strange that this isn't common sense, people have been getting angry at being nickel and dimed since the invention of money.
...yeah, didn't change anything right?
No really, all they did was add an earlier cutscene played in reverse, add an ending slideshow with a voice-over and add an unvoiced scene of people standing around because ARTISTIC VISION. I'd call that the bare minimum for a damage control free update.
Why does EA come to mind immediately after reading this?
Because EA, like all other big name publishers does this very very much. Admittedly one can even claim they sort of pioneered it, with the sims. But generally speaking, the biggest issues showed up with consoles, which suddenly allowed small content packs, but not full expansions.
Also it's strange that this isn't common sense, people have been getting angry at being nickel and dimed since the invention of money.
And people still do it, because it's more profitable to ride the rise in exploitation until consumers get sick of it than to try and avoid it. The Industry is doing all kinds of stupid shit right now, look at E3, only a very few groups who are close to the ground rather than the ones with stockholders to appease know what to do.
Now only if Atari could release a patch to allow the game and expansion of Act of War on steam to run on computers past the date of 2003...
Also it's strange that this isn't common sense, people have been getting angry at being nickel and dimed since the invention of money.
Many people don't realize they're getting nickel and dimed. We've got a whole generation of young gamers growing up that completely missed the era where all these micro-DLC's (whether they be new skins, characters, or map packs) were either unlockable or were released as free content further down the line. Remember Unreal Tournament and how Epic Games were more than happy to release all their post-game content for free? We don't see that with Gears of War. It IS partly that publishers and developers are exploiting people, but it's also that many customers simply don't realize that an alternative exists. And there's also a lot of young boys and girls who aren't paying for their games or the online services, so they have no concept of the money they're spending.
>ignores the countless maps released completely for free dumbs, why? What I said is completely true and makes Bioware more respectable, in the way of DLC map packs than Activision and the rest of EA
Bioware doesn't release shit for free out of the good will of their hearts. I bet you that if Mass Effect 3 hadn't caused a massive shitstorm, all the DLC they've been handing out would cost money.
Yeah but now DLC is for tiny useless shit, I'm talking about giant expansion packs that were pretty much a whole new game, like this one: [t]http://media.giantbomb.com/uploads/0/5327/222041-soaked__large.jpg[/t]
What about ARMA 2: Operation Arrowhead? And Civilization V: Gods & Kings?
current cheap dlc is basically charging for what modders usually put in games or at least, would put in games if they weren't all pathetically locked down now
EA jest głupi
What's wrong with (over)exploitation if the exploited are ok with it? nothing What's wrong with (over)exploitation if the exploited aren't ok with it? nothing
I need to pick up a game from these people, at least to show my support. CD Projekt certainly sound like a kickass bunch of people.
That's somewhat excusable. THQ is in the shitter and need to leech any and all potential cash as possible. May not be forgivable, but it's totally understandable.
Exactly. I bought the Genki Superbowl DLC and the Gangstas and Space and I was let down by both when it came to both content and length but I cannot feel angry about it because I actually like THQ and don't mind helping them out financially even if it is not by much.
I don't even like The Witcher and watching a video about it had more content than most $60 video games.
Expansion packs
Good ol' days. Thanks The Sims franchise this sweet idea died over the years.
