As someone who moved from MA to FL, I do not regret it. MA is a shithole and it is ridiculously expensive to live there. Although I did like living in Boston for a short while. Tons of stuff to do there.

I was pretty shocked too.
I've seen a handful of "state rankings" and New Jersey is almost always toward the bottom. I question their method of rating.

like I love the land in connecticut, I love the towns and scenery and people and history but god the state government fucking sucks.
Vermont is number one in public safety, and is also one of the states with some of the most lenient gun laws.
I've seen articles on Utah's growth, 7th is more than I expected. Ebay, Adobe and some other big companies have moved here.

I found it weird that I've wound up living in SC and my birth state (NH) wound up being #2 on the list.
Might have to move back eventually...
The interesting thing about South Carolina (and many other states in the Deep South) is that the larger cities (Charleston, Columbia, Greenville, etc.) are generally nicer and have decent/good economies while the rest of the state is much more rural and underdeveloped, hence why often the southern states rank lower on these types of surveys.

I'll take some comfort knowing mine's at least in the top 20, though I can understand Massachusetts being around the top. I had few problems during the short time I lived there, just never bring the topic of baseball to a conversation around there. They're pretty touchy about it.

Surprises me too because i live 10 minutes away from Pittsfield in a small town and its such a shithole and excluding Pittsfield takes away 2 of the largest high schools in the county
