This is just the way the world works though. If your skill can be replaced by something cheaper and more efficient, then you need to learn a new skill, or risk becoming irrelevant. The lack of these jobs just means more automation of low skill jobs, and more skilled jobs in the electronics and computer science fields.
The jobs don't go away, they just move to more skilled jobs since we are creating more effective ways to deal with them.
this is why you go to art school. I seen computers put together circuit boards and run database searches but I never seen a computer draw a big ol' realistic dick
Oh, I know. I'm not against automation. I encourage it. I'm just aware of the shitstorm it's going to cause. I believe it's inevitable though if we want to progress into the future.
It's definitely the only way forward. People are going to complain, news companies will paint it as the AI apocalypse, and unemployment will rise. Stupid laws will likely be passed preventing automation because of lobbying and history will repeat itself in a different context. We just need people to embrace the idea of evolution being a good thing for everyone in the long run.

You have obviously never stood naked and erect in front of an array of cameras while a 3D model of your penis is generated on a computer.

but can a computer dream up an original penis
but can a computer dream up an original penis
I'm sure after exposing it to multiple penises that it could generate one based on characteristics it has observed on other penises. All you have to do is go on Omegle and that technology already exists in their penile detection system. It wouldn't be too far-fetched to draw an image to go along with it.
um guys pls dont discuss dicks in my thread thnx
Since this is a Tesla thread:
Tesla confirms Model X deliveries to begin by September 30
Tesla Motors on Wednesday said customers will receive the new SUV before September 30, or the end of the third quarter. CEO Elon Musk said a configuration tool for designing a model X's color, interior and performance characteristics will appear on the Tesla website in two or three weeks.
http://www.cnet.com/news/tesla-model-x-suv-deliveries-q3/
I'll probably make a thread about the release when it happens if someone doesn't beat me.
Oh god don't sell that in japan

I can really see this being used by like a ton of places where the Tesla's autodrive/autopark features would make this almost like an uber type service. Like some fancy hotel will buy -9 of these and have it so that you walk out the front door and a car comes out to pick you up
Cars without drivers at all have the coolest implications, though. Fully automated taxis could revolutionize public transport, especially for American cities, which tend to have very bad public transit networks.
Taci depots with automated chargers, combined with fully autonomous vehicles, combined with an app to call for a ride could be run on a skeleton crew quite cheaply and conveniently. You think Taxi companies hate Uber? Wait until robo-cars hit the streets!
That's all cool and stuff, but public transport relying on taxis is a joke.
I really can't wait until Tesla starts making more affordable models in the near future.
Elon Musk is my spirit animal.
It wouldn't be too great in my town.
I don't even know where I'd charge it, and the electric bill at home is big enough already. Plus, if I DO get problems with it, I wouldn't be able to fix it for a small price, unlike the stone age of a car I already have. Plus, it costs WAY too much for anyone's pocket, unless you're stinking rich, and I do mean rich.
But I'll be damned if it ain't a marvelous car. Interior could be a tad better, beamer levels of better, but its still a great car.
It's really actually a wonderfully affordable car. It's under a 100,000$. That, for a luxury sedan with all the features and safety of a tesla?
That's actually very realistic, I realize that doesn't help you, or me afford it, but compared to a high end lexus or a good mercedes, yeah, it's pretty realistic.

They don't rely on it, but they certainly are a massive part of major cities. NYC, LA, Boston, Chicago, they all have extensive taxi infrastructures. Even smaller cities like Vancouver are just seas of taxi's during rush hour.
They're a hugely impactful part of transportation for a huge part of the city going population. Busses are also great, but those can also easily be automated, and after hearing the horror stories bus drivers tell, I believe that it'd be safer too.
How much do you spend on gas though? I guarantee you that electricity does not cost more than gas. The interior on the newer ones is actually quite luxurious compared to some of the same priceline vehicles.
Holy fuck, I've gotten merge sniped like 3 times in a row now...
20€ for 300km, even on a heavy foot and on a car that isn't even the nost economic diesel out there. Could have a smaller cc and go easier on the throttle and probably get tesla levels of mileage.
Electricity is a bit expensive, but I think we're on the wrong plans or something, or its the shitty fridge and freezer we have that are burning a hole on our bills, as always. At most, I'd say it evens it out.
The bigger problem here, is that I'll never have money for even a third owner Tesla.

It depends.
I'm at the point where I either aim for a cheap second hand grocerie's cart with a rocket strapped on to it, or in the long run, a somewhat economic and somewhat luxurious diesel car.
The high end part I'd aim for would be comfort, luxury and a nice looking design, and not as much power. 200hp for me is more than enough, maybe too much even. But if we talk about nice seats and extras...
Which is where I'm getting at. A new bmw or audi is like 60k euros, with a good enough engine, and that alone, sadly, is too much already :(
The tesla is pretty mad though. The only thing it can't do is make people come when it roars because it can't...roar... But oh well.
That's all cool and stuff, but public transport relying on taxis is a joke.
Public transportation in the US is a joke. If you're not in the heart of a major city, you probably don't have any kind of convenient access to efficient bus or rail lines, and suburban areas are not designed for walking. Everything is sprawled out over miles and miles. Our transportation infrastructure is almost totally reliant on personal vehicles. It is a pretty serious problem, because people too poor to afford to buy, maintain, or repair their own vehicle are going to struggle immensely.
Autonomous bus and Taxi networks would take advantage of what infrastructure we do have (roads and highways designed to accommodate huge traffic flow) to create at least a basic level of affordable public transportation.
If they make it faster, it could have you charging before you get out of your car. Or maybe you're unloading kids or groceries, or maybe someone calls, or maybe you're running late, or maybe you had a bad day and forget to charge, or maybe you really need to use the bathroom and then forget.
Tesla likes to combat all the inconveniences people say EVs have.
"They're not fast enough."
It can do 0-60 in 3 seconds.
"You can't go far on a charge."
It can do 280 miles per charge.
"Well it takes too long to charge."
Here's a nationwide supercharger network that can charge it under an hour.
"Still not fast enough."
Here's a battery swapping machine that can do it in 90 seconds without leaving your car.
"Well having to plug it in every day is inconvenient"
It can plug itself in.
Autocorrect ruining my fast typing groove.
I'd much rather plug my car in 5 times a day let alone once than deal with gas stations, and plus most people plug their phone, ipad, etc every night before bed so what is the actual problem with taking 2 seconds to plug It in

This is most definitely intended to be used with the auto-driving features. They've talked about being able to get out of your car at your front door and letting it drive itself to your garage - being able to plug itself in is a necessity before this can happen.
Tesla has fun stuff but if I'd spend 80k+ I'll get a used GTR. (Almost there personally!) Electric cars are kinda boring (quiet) and you can't modify them like you can regular cars. The range sucks too in comparison.
The concept that you can't tool around on electric vehicles is bullshit.

Can't very well drop a supercharger on it. And if you screw with stuff like that your battery life will go out the door.
Fuck I want a tesla so bad but I'll probably never ever get that kind of money. :frown:

And that means you can't tool around on it?
People HAVE tooled around with their Teslas and other brands of electrics.
And frankly, fuck turbo and superchargers on street cars. That shit is just rudely loud and distracting in the vast majority of cars that drive with it. Yes, roar away, it scientifically lengthens your penis(this isn't at you, but rather the dicks who live in my city and don't know what a "muffler" is)

You can build electric cars from the ground up just like you can with ICE cars. People do it all the time. It just requires a different set of skills. You can take apart a Tesla without killing yourself though it voids any warranty and they frown upon it, but so do any other modern car companies with all the plastic cover shit they put in car engine bays these days. Also, EV performance can be effected with a variety of building techniques, just like ICE engines. Do I choose Lithium ion batteries? Or lead-acid? Do I add fuzes to my cells or not? What motor should I choose for my weight? What kind of controllers, wires, chargers? There's probably just as much variety in EV building as there is in ICE building. It's just not as widely known of a skill as wrenching on an engine.

Building an engine takes a learning curve. Building an EV takes a learning curve. Just because a gear head mechanic can't do it doesn't make it impossible.
Yes but electric cars are quiet and "boring." Nothing beats the sound of a turbo spooling up or a supercharger whine.
Yes but electric cars are quiet and "boring." Nothing beats the sound of a turbo spooling up or a supercharger whine.
Electric motors make a scifi noise on launch. It's not as loud as a gas engine, but electric cars built for performance are not 100% quiet, and instant, ass clenching acceleration out of the gate is not boring. A boring EV is boring but so is a boring ICE. A stock Smart Car is boring. So all gas cars must be boring too.
I feel like one of those old people who hate computers, but being someone who works in security I can't fathom wanting to own a car that has the ability to control steering through software. It's a disaster waiting to happen.
Seems a little unnecessary
Cool as hell though
They have a lot of wealthy customers with money and a taste for gimmicks and fun, so it's a good idea.
