To be fair, it's really not that hard to track down a copy. Part of the reason they dumped them in a landfill was because they had produced millions of the things.
not really, it's for a documentary that xbox is filming for the Xbox One. the documentary is exclusive to XB1's movie store.
I can't really fathom why they're doing it, to be honest. It's been far too long for shit-talking Atari to actually matter; and I doubt they can spin it as an anti-Sony thing since their actions were more analogous to MS's.
Would be so cool if there was a Native American cementry ON TOP of it.
Oh my god this is spectacularly hilarious that this urban legends is real. I love it!
Now for the real question: What the hell should we be excavating for now?
The 3 SwordQuest remaining prizes!
So the myth was true!!
Oh great now we can finally have our vidya game creepypasta's about the buried E.T. games that a group of people found, and the cartridges turn out to be haunted or some bullcrap
Can someone tell me what is so awful about this game? I have known about the "legend" (I always thought it was a fact..) for as long as I can remember but I have never actually heard why the game is so bad and failed.

You can see for yourself https://archive.org/details/atari_2600_e.t._-_the_extra-terrestrial_1982_atari_jerome_domurat_howard_scott_wa
They should fill the hole up with COD games
Do we have any photo where it shows more than 5 games? Didn't they bury thousands of copies?
This whole documentary seems like a publicity stunt.

a secret world at the center of the earth
Looks like James Rolfe has written a blog response to this.
They should fill the hole up with Metroid Other M copies
Fixed
na they were put down there to seal away an old god, once we start digging into it though we'll unleash the dark lord chithulu and 10,000 years of darkness will ensue, which will probably cancel out the global warming
I'm not all that willing to buy an entire console just to see a documentary.
Hopefully it'll be released on Blu-Ray/DVD after a certain period of time.
Fixed
Should be room for both
Should be room for both
Yeah but then the COD fanbase would dig all the games up
0-1//10 bad idea
Unless you incinerate them with lots and lots of napalm and threw em in there
Earlier today I had blood coming from my eyes and had a small seizure.
I'm blaming this thing entirely.
Thus ends one of the first legends in video gaming history.

no idea if the exclusitivity ends but it's part of the Tv Entertainment that Xbox is making for the XB1, the rest of the new announced tv stuff is being announced on monday.
Xbox already announced a Quantum Break TV show thing to go with the Game, 2 Halo TV things with one made by ridley scott and the other by steven speilberg, and now this documentary.
In revenge Atari will dig up buried copies of Windows Vista in Redmond.
Pretty cool to think this was just a few hours south of me...Haven't actually played the game but would surely buy a copy..
They should sell them.
I'd pay good money for a terrible game that had been buried under New Mexico for 30 years.
Why do people even regard this as one of the worst, if not the worst games ever? The only complaint I have is the game being boring.
Oh, and the pits too, but they're not much of a problem to me.

Because Aliens: Colonial Marines hadn't been made yet back then.

Why do that when you can just buy a current gen terrible game for $60.

Its considered absolute shit because it was the herald of the Video Games crash in '83. It didn't directly cause the crash on its own but it certainly contributed. Quality of games back then slowly dwindled to nothing as developers tried to quickly shovel out titles in order to cash in on them. Sound familiar?
Can I get some context on this?
Can I get some context on this?
Long story short: Atari (I started to type Activision. Freudian Slip?) wanted to just rush the game out as quickly as possible without putting any effort in to it. The game was a miserable failure. They took all unsold copies and buried them in this landfill, then tried to pretend it never happened. And for decades it was just seen as an urban legend in gaming, no one could prove it, but so many people knew it and told it and believed it. And now it has been found.
