If he had guns and had the option of giving up his guns for a year I'd accept that.

If you commit crimes with guns in the US don't you already lose your ability to have them
As dumb as this is, at least it's only for misdemeanors. So you've got the choice of going to jail for a week for driving on a suspended license... or going to church every Sunday for a year.
I still think I'd choose jail, unless they offered this for felonies too ... which would be an absolute disaster. Can you imagine, a church filled with violent offenders and people stoned out of their fucking mind? Lol
It's a small town in Alabama, there's probably like two Atheists in the whole place.
There's no problem with this.
Why would anyone chose a month of jail over ~100 hours in a church.

It's the principal of the matter.
This is a really slippery slope, if this stands other places might adopt it, as it becomes popular bigger places will take it in as well until it becomes the norm.
give me a nice, unblessed jail cell any day
Well you know what they say, once you go rabbi you don't go bye-bye.
I'd choose church.
Much better since I don't have to pay a fine or go to prison.

I don't see how that's a bad thing.
In case you've never been to church, most Christian churches are very respectful of your beliefs, even if you're an atheist. And it's not like they try to convert you.
I've seen some churches that even talk about atheism in a somewhat positive manner. They get into a lot of philosophy-type stuff and it's pretty interesting.

that's an awesome anecdote but 1) I was raised Catholic and they pretty much pray for nonbelievers to be saved from Hell and 2) it's rural Alabama so I highly doubt they're anything like that.
