Everybody is taking a joke advertisement seriously. Why?
because the speed limits are actually too low, at least in canada.
People will drive the speed they are comfortable with, I don't see an issue with raising speed limits, or putting limits depending on weight of the vehicle instead
People generally drive within about 10 or 15 miles of the speed limit. Rising would, as guessed, cause people to go faster. Speed limits depending on weight doesn't really make any sense.
Speed limits depending on weight doesn't really make any sense.
They do. I drive around in a little coupe and I've got it up to 130mph before (at like 3am when no one was on the road) and still had what felt like the same maneuverability as I had when I drove a (big) truck going like 80. but I do agree with the first part of your post. I wish they would raise the speedlimits, at least on interstates.
I would be ok with this, just wait the first few weeks for all the fools to crash and burn and only the good drivers should remain on the road. Everyone around here uses speed limits as a speed to drive around and not at anyway. In fact if I ever go the speed limit in my city every other car switches lanes and drives past me or rides my ass all day; you become a greater traffic hazard obeying the speed limit at that point. I'm all for increasing the speed limit, might actually get to use my damn engine for once if they were higher. Texas has my envy.

If you're driving the speed limit and they are riding your ass and hit you, it's their fault. But the whole advertisement was a joke by EA to market a racing video game and the people who actually took it seriously either didn't read the actual article or look at the 'fact' image, or just happen to be incapable of understanding a joke when it comes from someone they don't like.
As if gas prices weren't high enough.

Cars use a lot more fuel the faster you go, at 75 mph you can be using up to 20% more fuel than you would be a 55. ~55mph is the sweet spot for fuel efficiency.
Obvious marketing for NFS Most Wanted.
Oh fuck, really?! What the hell gave you THAT idea?!
They do.
Its not really anything to do with maneuverability, if you hit something doing 130 your going to be dead and whatever you hit is going to be dead. It also involves you not being able to respond or stop in time for anything.
how's this for a concept 1) EA releases this as a joke to market the new NFS game 2) Suddenly everyone freaks out because they think they're serious 3) Marketing completed because now everyone is talking about them
In that instance, the people riding your ass while you go the speed limit are making themselves hazards, not you. If you're driving the speed limit and they are riding your ass and hit you, it's their fault.
Not that I disagree with the principle of myself not being the one at fault; I'm still a heightened hazard risk in comparison because I'm the one actively holding up the flow of traffic and causing people to drive in a more erratic fashion to go around me -- even if they're the ones driving incorrectly to begin with, I still become the greater hazard. Sort of like a big rock on the coastline, you're in the way of the flow even if you have a right to be doing it. I'd rather they didn't hit me whether right or wrong in anycase -- insurance covers cost; it can't replace legacy.
I'm glad someone has a sense of humor in their offices, well we could already tell that by Dragon Age 2 actually.
Not bad.
Watching that got me to play Driver: SF. All the cars are in that. I don't know if that's good advertising or not! EDIT: Obviously apart from the newer cars. I've ordered one of those new Focus's.

If the marketing team managed to predict that, then goddamn they must have one of the best marketing teams ever.
Politics? They fit right in, snug as a bug. [editline]30th October 2012[/editline] Doesn't the Isle of Man lack speed limits? Isn't the Isle of Man famous for high-speed traffic collisions?
Aren't German highways known for having no speed limits either? Aren't german highways no worse as far as collisions go as everyone else. Let's be honest, that add is obviously meant to be an add for something else at even a cursory glance. And as long as you keep a few braincells you can see that.
If it weren't for this game, SSX would be the only EA game i ever bought this year.
-sanic video- that is all
[t]http://i.imgur.com/5c0Mv.jpg[/t] On a serious note: Raising the speed limit is a bad idea. Whereas driving fast in a controlled area (like a race track) is one thing (the people driving this fast are usually very experienced at doing this), driving fast in an enviroment where the other people driving almost certainly have shifting degrees of driving experience would most likely lead to very nasty car crashes. I guess this shows that the people behind this ad haven't done their research properly
That's actually pretty funny. People are taking this way too fucking seriously. Seriously, why is everyone acting like EA actually wants people to raise the speed limit? Are people that fucking dense?

Are people that fucking dense?
Possibly, but I'd say it's more attributed to some people having knee-jerk reactions to anything EA. I think this advertisement is quite amusing.
" The folks who publish the Battlefield and Mass Effect franchises aren’t above some really questionable marketing campaigns. Remember the fake protests for Dante’s Inferno or the Dead Space 2 ads that talked about your mums? Now, their latest could-be-controversial gambit is a plea to raise the speed limit to 130mph (209km/h) because that’s what Americans want. EA took out an advertisement in The New York Times today, arguing that raising the speed limit in America to Need For Speed-levels would stimulate job creation and stop people from texting. The basis of their pitch is a recently passed law that changed the speed limit in Texas to 85mph (137km/h). It’s clearly a spoofy attention-grab, but one that’s a little tone-deaf to the dangers of driving so fast in the real world. Other meteorological concerns are on people’s minds today, so we’ll see if enough people notice to get up in arms over this. Or not. Your mileage may vary." SOURCE:http://www.kotaku.com.au/2012/10/ea-wants-to-raise-the-speed-limit/ lolwut.
Australia has a max of 110km/h thats 68 miles. I mean, we all go 120 but even still that's nowhere near americas speed limit. I would love to go to america and hire a sports car for a day(I'd prefer europe somewhere but thats expensive).
Obvious marketing for NFS Most Wanted.
no its an illuminati plot princes diana did 911
People generally drive within about 10 or 15 miles of the speed limit. Rising would, as guessed, cause people to go faster. Speed limits depending on weight doesn't really make any sense.
Well a 4 ton 4x4 or 23,000lb semi truck should be slapped with a lower speed limit than say, my 1800lb Miata. A semi truck can't slow down for shit when it's going 55mph as it is, and they're far more lethal in car accidents. A miata isn't going to win any safety awards either, but the fucking thing isn't a wrecking ball, either
Australia has a max of 110km/h thats 68 miles.
You mean 130km/h.
I'm surprised some people took ea seriously over this. It's such an obvious advertisement joke that it should be the first thing in your mind before actually reading the article. Anyway, I think the highest the US will ever see is 85, which is in TX130 in Texas.
Not sure if I'm actually convinced to buy this, but that commercial is hilarious.
I find it hilarious
Speed limits in the US are stupidly low though.
I thought they were trying to increase the limits of their employees' work speeds...
