i visited a website with esoteric material once and am now dead
btw what the fuck is "esoteric material"? that's a worryingly vague thing
Magic, Eastern religions and secret societies.
I lived with a nationally mandated internet proxy for several years so I'll make a few points here:
-Proxies are notorious for having severe caching issues (at certain times); this will at least lead to speed issues at certain points and at most start serving your data to other people (i.e. you might load youtube one day and see some random username up the top). The latter issues are very rare.
-They aren't going to hire 10 people who sift through the internet who will categorize each website they see, most of it will probably be done through securecomputing.com/sfwhere or a similar service
-Some websites like YouTube have been 'friendly' to the idea of censorship, so the easiest way of blocking 18+ content is to make the page where you would usually receive the cookie for 18+ content a single URL. ISPs use this URL to completely block all 18+ content on YouTube. If you use your browser through an alternative internet connection and successfully get the cookie you can watch anything you want with no problems.
-On some websites, the categorization company will decide to put a subdomain as a different category than the main website, so you'll visit a website and no images or the CSS files will load. Lots of fun.
-Most https websites are very difficult for them to block.
-If you're going to get a VPN/VPS, get a VPS and get it from a hosting company. Do not get one from companies that specialize in bypassing censorship because they all suck and they all get blocked extremely quickly. Aim for a decent VPS company (it'll cost around $10 per month) who specialize in hosting or something similar. Usually the easiest way to do this is to set a second browser just to use the VPS (use PuTTy for tunneling the connection).
Just like the Chinese "Great Fire-wall", people are just gonna proxy around or some other similar solution. Not only does it render the block useless against those who really want to visit "the dark side", it also adds the naughty-factor to kids who want to do shady stuff.
I dont see it as much different from what my old middle school used to do. They banned websites from being visited and put porn filters on the school's network, but anyone who can spell "proxy" on google is eventually gonna find a way around restrictions. in 7th grade, everyone were visiting Rotten and watching women get mounted by dogs and horses during recess.
National censorship is very, very different to the blocking at schools and businesses.
They will likely block all ports except for a very select few, and regularly go through public proxy lists and add them to block lists. This is why a paid VPS will work 9/10 times but regular proxies are pretty much a joke.
It is also possible for them to completely block secure traffic etc (I think this is what is done in Iran nowadays). They can completely block pretty much anything but a lot of services would fail because of it.
[editline]29th July 2013[/editline]
Oh yeah, another point.
Have fun when they block websites like Flickr, DeviantArt, Tumblr, Thepiratebay etc because there is no way to stop adult content loading without individually blocking it (pretty much when they go to a website that is a "mixed bag", they will just completely block it)

Exactly, they can just redefine it whenever they feel like it.

The proxy run in the UAE and other parts of the Middle East by Etisalat work exactly along those principles.
One of the other downsides not listed by that comprehensive post by nigerianprince is also that downloading from sites like rapidshare or other similar file sharing sites as a free userbecomes out of the question because (as far as I can explain it, not knowing the technology behind it) your IP is shared across a few people so someone is always downloading something.
They'd love it if the internet consisted of a few 'channels' you could watch 'for entertainment' or 'for shopping' and otherwise not be able to go-to/create whatever online content you please.
And worryingly, some people would be okay with that.
Just having a 'Facebook' channel for convenience sake, or an 'Ebay' channel or an 'Amazon' channel.
This is worrying because... well... there's lots of websites out there with truly excellent information, or where truly cutting-edge discussion is taking place.
Most of that sort of thing is certainly classed as 'esoteric'.
It's worrying that freedom is being betrayed here for safety.
A Ben Franklin quote springs to mind:
"Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."
fucking pathetic

Maybe we'll see less shitty Rust threads once this goes up.

Yeah wikipedia and a lot of other community websites will also have you on their banlist. You'll also be auto blacklisted from forums etc because people will leave their computers running 24/7 with spam malware shit fucking up the internet.
Sopa?
Also, look at the origins of pornography and sex, and why they're so taboo, and you get it all in a different light and it is thoroughly amusing. Here it is, abridged for your delication:
Sex has always been what people do, naturally, as all animals also also do.
There were no problems with this long ago. The Ancient people (namely Greeks) were notorious for being orgy lovers. Homosexual, heterosexual, masturbation, prostitutes, pornography, peep shows - it didn't matter. There weren't taboos about these things because nobody invented the idea of any of it being bad or wrong.
Fuck whenever your horny. Fun times for all. Sure, they had some taboos, but generally it was a sexy free for all.
Then, a Christian theologist called Augustine of Hippo decided that Sex was bad and people were being unholy by putting their attention in females instead of 100% on God.
At the time, marriage was strictly to unite clans and families, and people who got married usually had their girls, servants, concubines and mistresses on the side as well, for sexual gratification.
They decided, at this point, that Adam and Eve must have reproduced for the sake of reproduction, not for sexual gratification, and how people should attain to be like that in order to be closer to God.
So Augustine influenced 'Christian marriage' - where people would get married, STRICTLY for reproducing (no thrills) with one person (Adam and Eve style), and that way they'd be closer to God. So marriage became a bit of a Christian influenced, holy thing.
Anyway, swing around to the 1200's and Knights are charging around the countries, slaying and raping which at the time, were manly things to do.
Montesquieu writes that around this time, Chivalry (and tales of Romance) were invented as tools of discipline, to stop the knights from raping as much as they pleased and instead, switch to defending and honour the ladies.
So, around this time, with the advent of Romance and the invention of 'Love' people start getting interested in marriage, romantic tales and love.
Christianity sees that people are quickly becoming interested in love and romance, simply because of the rawness that it involves. And that's a danger to the Church itself. More people being romantic and loving, means less people being close to God.
So Christianity decides to get it's fat greasy fingers involved yet again, in ruining everyone's fun, solely for their preservation. At the time, they had a lot of sway so...
They changed the terms of Marriage to sound better with what people enjoyed. Suddenly it wasn't about only loving God anymore - it was about loving a person. And sex became about passion, gratification and expression, which were simply cool at the time BUT only with one person.
They decided, at this point, that Adam and Eve were now romantic lovers, and this was the reason for allowing romantic relationships, whilst also being able to keep a strong relationship with God.
Having lots of sway, they managed to take over the entire scene, and make marriage a 100% Christian affair. So now if you wanted to be married and engage in romantic activity, you had to be an involved Christian. It was a pretty wise move for them (from a business standpoint).
And now...?
800 years pass - and we're stuck with a very weird, convoluted, completely fucked up version of marriage. It's not marriage on it's original terms, it's not marriage on it's original christian terms. It's marriage on a modern, highly convoluted and thoroughly mixed up level. And you really have to dig deep to see any trace of how it came about.
Die hard Christians certainly aren't interested in questioning the validity and origins of their own tradition, because that might raise further questions that they'd rather just remain ignorant to.
Not even hardcore atheists really want to question it, because they're too busy telling everyone God doesn't exist to go digging into the traditions and how it's obviously impacted everything, and to what extent.
And where does it leave sex and pornography?
Well it shouldn't be too hard for you to tie up the loose ends about where pornography and sex-for-fun stood the whole time.
Sex was made taboo because it was un-religious. It became bad and wrong to engage in sex outside of Christian marriage. Pornography and masturbation were made taboo because it was un-religious. It became bad and wrong to engage in these activities. Homosexuality became taboo because it was un-religious. It became bad and wrong to engage in homosexual relationships.
Everyone should honestly be educated in this kind of thing. Seeing where stuff came from to decide if it's valid in today's society. Because lots of things aren't. I feel we're making progress step-by-step, but then stuff like this comes along and it feels like an epic jump backwards.
Homosexual marriage was recently allowed, but honestly - who the fuck wants to be married when you realise what a massive clusterfuck of bullshittery it is.
And this filter? What the fuck is this? More stifling of nature and masculinity, in favour of a joy-joy society where nobody argues, raises questions or looks deeply into things. Where people smile all the time, and everything's a little bit more christian influenced than anyone cares to admit.

Nah I know what esoteric means, which is why I was so worried. Basically means 'anything niche or anything not fully understood by us we'll censor the fuck out of it'. Just reeks of scared middle aged men.
We need to stop this. I'm serious. This is worse than SOPA/PIPA and I really hope it doesn't pass. If it does, well, REVOLUTION!

Won't work though, not as democratic here as one might be led to believe.
I can imagine them making the unblock system a login website.... the website would be blocked probibly cause it has the word porn on it in 'unblock porn'

But surely this is his idea, so he would be spineless if he U-turned?
Which he will have to because he's clearly had advisors on this matter that are too idealist for it to work, and not very tech savvy.
What if I buffered up every porn video on pornhub and never turned my computer off
Your move, Dave
