"Science will win, because it works."
And then he smiles like the badass he is.
I have a hard time beliving Hawking would ask the question, "Why does existence exist" as it has a very simple answer.
Being that existence; meaning the totality of everything, cannot not exist, and thus cannot come into being.
The question of "What existed before nothing existed and what nothings gave rise to everything" is absurdly silly, you'd think Hawking would realize that.
Oh jerk yourself off later, it's a perfectly valid question to ask why things are the way they are. That's the point in finding a unifying theory.
Is it just me, or is he being alot more outspoken lately?
So your options are either
A) God exists
B) Hawking is the most powerful man in the world and should rule over us all
Asinine score 10/10
Are you being argumentative without any sort of argument for any decent reason or can I just ignore your posts from here on out
He said Hawking has every reason to believe there is no god because he has a debilitating disease, I said he has every reason to believe in god because he's survived with that disease 20 times longer than anyone expected him to, and then I made a 40k reference for fun. How is that the least bit asinine
Hawking is genuinely the stuff of legends. Its crazy how he's accomplished so much.
I wonder if they could make something for him that lets him communicate faster, like using brain waves or something.
I wonder if they could make something for him that lets him communicate faster, like using brain waves or something.
This.
Oh god yes, this.
This man could be the savior to our species.
I'm going to ignore the parts of your post with no references (give sources) and skip straight to the one we all recognize.
If the atom bomb wasn't created, MUCH more blood would've been shed overall.
He didn't give sources because he didn't have to. Everything he said is common knowledge. I suggest you take a history class if you honestly think religion has done no good. Also, his point was that the atomic bomb wasn't that bad to begin with. Religion is to war as science is to nuclear weapons. It's only one tiny aspect of a massive category that has done much more good than bad but has done both.
Facepunch should have a Steven Hawking appreciation day, where everyone changes their avatar to Steven Hawking.
Facepunch should have a Steven Hawking appreciation day, where everyone changes their avatar to Steven Hawking.
Let's do it now.
The fuck are you talking about? He was told when he was diagnosed he probably only had 2 or 3 years left. THAT WAS 47 YEARS AGO. If anyone has reason to believe in God it's him.
That or he's got more willpower than the rest of the human race combined and we should elect him Emperor of Mankind.
That is fucking badass.

Pretty much this, thanks for saving me some typing.
[release]Celebrated physicist Stephen Hawking knows more about the universe than almost any other person ever to walk the planet, but some answers still escape even him.[/release]
Now that was just a cheap shot.
Let's do it now.
Done. Hawking is such a badass.

Oh yes Mister Condescending Atheist, Religion is the root of all problems, and religion causes cancer. Yes sir.
Oh yes Mister Condescending Atheist, Religion is the root of all problems, and religion causes cancer. Yes sir.
He's wrong, but that doesnt mean religion is some saving grace of humanity. Science was performed inside the religion because at the time, thats all scientists could do.
Oh I know, Religion is both good and bad, as Science could be both good and bad.
Why does it have to be religion vs. science? You can have both.
Why does it have to be religion vs. science?
On facepunch, the two can't work together, which is only half true in the real world. Personally a world where people aren't constantly trying to disprove each other's beliefs sounds great.
Why does it have to be religion vs. science? You can have both.
All the time.
All the fucking time.
Oh I know, Religion is both good and bad, as Science could be both good and bad.
I suppose experiment can be done unethically but the knowledge they produce is never bad.
On facepunch, the two can't work together, which is only half true in the real world. Personally a world where people aren't constantly trying to disprove each other's beliefs sounds great.
When one person wants to tell and teach things not based on anything, are you not supposed to tell them they are wrong?
I suppose experiment can be done unethically but the knowledge they produce is never bad.
Science can still fuck up though, just like any religion. Some guy mis-judges something in a nuclear reactor, it's very possible many people for generations could be affected. And just like the crusades or the extremists in every major religion today, someone fucks up and does something wrong and skews the name of that religion and possibly injures/kills people.
Why does it have to be religion vs. science? You can have both.
"The earth is flat" vs "The earth is round"
We have hit a snag rather quickly.
Science WILL win.
But religion shall have some ideas supported by science rooting from worldwide spirituality.
Don't discount the thousands of years our ancestors around the world have spent staring at stars and thinking. I'm not saying they achieved scientific precision in their theories. But they were on to SOMETHING.
All in all I think science will give birth to new kinds of spirituality and non dogmatic religion.
When one person wants to tell and teach things not based on anything, are you not supposed to tell them they are wrong?
Sure you can, I guess i just meant we don't really need to force things as silly as personal beliefs down each others throats when there are more important secular things to deal with at the time.
I have to admit this has gone rather smoothly for a bunch of people talking about religion on facepunch

I don't think you quite understand what science is
"The earth is flat" vs "The earth is round"

That isn't because of religion though, that's just what people thought at the time. I've never heard of a Christian saying the earth is flat in the 21st century.
that isn't because of religion though, that's just what people thought at the time. I've never heard of a christian saying the earth is flat in the 201st century.
time travel :o
I don't think you quite understand what science is
Technically the knowledge can be bad, like the knowledge to make a super infectious and deadly disease, all scientific but terribly bad.
