AWB wants to illicit a response. By themselves they can't do anything directly, but it only takes one action from them to set off a series of racially motivated violence, and make the country and ANC look bad.
The leader of ANC's Youth Wing, Julius Malema, has been doing some racially-charged speeches to his followers and it has certainly not helped matters.
I'm sure Nelson Mandela is not happy.
