"The North Pole is an insane 36 degrees warmer than normal as winter descends"

Quit arguing over whether or not Americans should switch to metric or not because the answer is yes, they should.
Now start discussing how we force Congress to act on mitigating carbon emissions and switching all of our energy production to nuclear or green methods. And I really mean force.
The preferred, sensible, and humane way to replace congressmen, being the vote, lies in the hands of the uninformed masses who probably have things that are justifiably more important to themselves to worry about than climate change. This means that in the midterm elections, where real change would take place, the same old fucks that keep getting elected will continue denying the data presented and we will see the same limp-dick "changes" squeezed through by the congressmen who don't deny and who have actual concern. But even then, who can say with the Trump administration? Look at his cabinet shortlist. He has an oil tycoon and gas company CEO as top contenders for secretary of the interior, climate change skeptics for the EPA, and he also wants to refocus NASA's efforts away from climate observation.
The United States may well be, with its actions over the next ten years, the one to blame for the collapse of modern civilization and, quite likely at this point, the next mass extinction event.
So what the fuck are we going to do to prevent this, Facepunch? I know that we aren't experts on the subject, but we would do well to discuss this and determine what powers we have, rather than waste time bickering about what measurement system should be used.
I was looking at one of the threads you linked, and saw one user mention potential increases of anywhere up to 20-30 Celsius.
This would put the earth at +10C above the Cretaceous
As far as we know, the Cretaceous period was the warmest the earth has ever been since it has had complex life

This year really dialed things up to 11...

Holy shit.
It's over for us, isn't it?
[editline]20th November 2016[/editline]
Great Filter, here we come.
That seems absolutely absurd, and the person who posted that doesn't seem to have any data backing up the estimate.
You should know better than that.
Still, it is worrying, hopefully there is bounceback in upcoming days, but I wouldn't hold my hopes too much.
20-30 Celsius.
I'm pretty sure that's just a theoretical maximum of how much warmer the planet could get, at least within human timespan, given the known greenhouse-gas sources and solar flux. I've never heard actual climate models that go above a 10C rise, and few that even go above 5C.
Quit arguing over whether or not Americans should switch to metric or not because the answer is yes, they should.
lol my taxpayer dollars arent going to changing all of the signage across all of america for no tangible benefit when si is taught in school anyway and everyone knows both and we dont even have proper healthcare, fuck that
this aint europe where countries could easily make that switch in a couple of years, this is a gigantic country where such a change would result in huge logistical problems. we dont even have internet everywhere yet.
Still, it is worrying, hopefully there is bounceback in upcoming days, but I wouldn't hold my hopes too much.
That isn't how it works, nor is that the timescale in which it would work if it did indeed work like that.

I hope all that oil money was worth it.
That isn't how it works, nor is that the timescale in which it would work if it did indeed work like that.
Sorry. I was looking at the same discussion and looking at forecast for upcoming weeks. The impression I got is that it is getting slightly better, rather than being +15-20C, it could be around +5-10C.
Maybe bounceback was bad wording. What I meant was 'situation shows some improving in upcoming days/weeks'.
-what many would dismiss as "alarmism"-

Humans are wonderful economic pragmatists.
If we can convince politicians and corporations the world over that cutting carbon emissions will actually make them more money in the future by not subjecting humanity to a total societal collapse, perhaps something can get done. Big Oil could easily switch to green energy and start turning a profit within a decade if they could actually be convinced to make the switch. But since oil makes more bank in the immediate future, they never will. Well, unless an oil producer floods the market and bankrupts them like Saudi did to Russia and Venezuela.
how do climate change deniers think beijing gets like this:
[t]https://timedotcom.files.wordpress.com/2016/01/beijing-air-pollution.jpeg?quality=85&w=1100[/t]
and how do they believe that if we repeal all our green energy incentives that the rest of the world will not become like that?
To be fair isn't this really more to do with pollution directly than anything to do with climate change? It ain't foggy there because of the heat, it's foggy because the smog is directly covering the city.
Oh fuck, that is definitely not a good sign, oh fuck, this year gets more terrifying by the day.
I feel so hopeless. Please tell me it is not too late.
Good luck to the coastal FPers, you're going to need it.
To my son:
it's 10:55 AM, on Monday, 2016/11/21, and I want this on record that dad is sorry how horrible of a world you're going to be trapped in.

Our broken version of capitalism is all focused on short term profits. Expecting companies to look even as far as ten years into the future is unrealistic, much less 50 years into the future.
Can we please just start doing something about this? Please? I know we just elected the fucking climate change denier as president but surely someone has to realize that this isn't a fucking game, right? I don't care how it gets done, even relaxing nuclear restrictions would be fine by me, I just really really want us to actually get started on the process of reversing climate change. Please.

Poor walruses. At least the Walrus Island will help some, I hope.
Here is a more recent graph - it still seems to be getting worse. :worried:

Gonna suck to live in florida though
For how serious this looks, it's pretty frightening that this is apparently limited to a forum about Arctic ice, a thread here, a blog and one news article... All the graphs make it look like a straight up "fuck it, here we go" event was just triggered.

For what it's worth, I've seen several news sites covering it, but it doesn't seem to be sparking a lot of discussion on many sites/forums/etc. Seems that people are either in denial, or don't grasp the full weight of this situation. This should be on televised news outlets, for fucks' sake.
I wish we could just all realize that Thorium is a thing and make the switch entirely
what do you say to conservatives that believe it's earth's natural cycle. rising tides will return to ice when the globe starts cooling again
also, earth has been through worse before humans and it's still around, etc

Natural cycles do exist but human carbon emission has added to the equation. We're adding to the delicate carbon cycle. Billions of tons of CO2, Methane, etc are there that otherwise wouldn't had it not been for human intervention. If humans were pre-industrial you could argue it was natural circumstances. However, our extreme emission of chemicals into the atmosphere must be considered when looking at why there is such a significant increase in warming and other climactic changes like ocean warming and acidification.
That saving the environment isn't about saving the planet. It's about maintaining a livable habitat for humanity. We're not hippies trying to save some endangered slug species with the ESA. It's a bigger picture that focuses on the survivablity of our own species. Yes, earth has been through a lot worse. But has Humanity? Have you?

The only silver lining to any of this is losing Florida.
