Explain yourself. Contradictions generally don't work unless you have a damn good reason for them.
The whole idea of having all the ports available counted on the security enforced inside of the system. Windows totally ditched the proposal of opened gate into the system, where the system would have to actually care about what the hell is that packet that just came, and instead just count on disabling majority of those packets.
Now if you are just an user, you don't even notice it. That's because most of the applications and services did submit under this way of things working. Now the idea of the internet in general was totally different.
While having a firewall and a public IP, you can just open the ports you need opened, but because majority of people are (due to the limited possibilities) content with only the basic kinds of packets and ports, NAT's often already apply those restrictions on the way. This makes internet much less free and open communication channel it was supposed to be.
To sum it up, there was a kinda useful possibility of using the numerous ports, and Windows were like "Fuck that", and blocked all except the most needed ones.
I sometimes hear people saying that Linux utilizes "Security by obscurity". Well, I would say that Windows utilize "Security by limiting the choices"
They wouldn't abandon Windows, why? Because Windows accounts for around 80% of the total OS market share.
I'm not a fan boy but I cannot see why macs are better. I have never had a mac and to me they seem less bang for buck and less supported, and isn't the reason why they seem more secure is because how little people target them?
Only partially.
Ask anybody who lives really beating the security of a complex system. Everybody will tell you that Unix sprung off systems like Linux, Sun or Mac are much harder to get into.
Google already uses their own version of Ubuntu called Goobuntu (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goobuntu )
Almost half of the employees use this. They're probably going to just make the other half use it too.

Hats off to Apple for pulling off such a successful scam, tricking pretentious arts people into thinking their products are superior for the job.
Windows is obsolete.
Edit: Having 40 disagrees, 7 dumbs, 6 agrees and 2 funnies, I might expand on this.
Windows runs on an old kernel, is prone to malware, viruses, freezing and crashing, has a crappy command line interface. The only reason it's used is due to a monopoly by Microsoft. It doesn't obey standards and in general, is a piece of shit.
Windows 7 has not crashed on or hanged on me once, and is not a piece of shit, its only prone to viruses if you have no AV and Ant-spyware installed.
Windows 7 is damn awesome, so is linux and mac OSX. Why can't you stupid fanboys just figure out that if one was clearly better than the other, then nobody would use the other one. Each operating system has it's own set of advantages and disadvantages and the fact that you force your opinion about them on other people so aggressively makes you look like a religious fanatic. Quit clinging to your opinions so disparately and shut up about it.
[editline]01:35PM[/editline]
oh fuck if you replace windows 7, linux and mac osx with Xbox360, PS3, and Wii, the argument still applies
It's been proved time and time again that Mac is more vulnerable that Windows.

haha, you don't know how an OS works do you?

even linux needs to be setup properly to be secure.

Old kernel? As apposed to what? The brand new and shiny made-from-scratch ones coming out every day?
NT - 17 years old
Linux - 19 years old
Darwin - 11 years old
As long as I can still google shit without Macs ever being mentioned I don;t really give two shits
I don't care that they are going more mac-y. I am pumped they are going more Linux-y.
I don't care that they are going more mac-y. I am pumped they are going more Linux-y.
I assume you'll be pissed if it gets more windy.
I am yet to see Google confirmation of this policy change though.
I think this is a good way for Microsoft to kick their products into high gear and strive to make better products to keep contracts with big companies like Google.
I don't care that they are going more mac-y. I am pumped they are going more Linux-y.
They've had 50%+ computers running an inhouse Linux distro for ages.
I would like to have another screen, tilted so I can be all cool when I'm programming.
But I don't have the funding.
In the defense of Windows.

why do any of you give a shit what google uses internally
why do any of you give a shit what google uses internally
The whole trigger for the change was the fact that Google China was hacked through an exploit in Microsoft's Internet Explorer...
that doesn't answer my question at all
My point is, if Google see the exploit as a large enough reason to move away from the platform, then consumers may follow.
why do any of you give a shit what google uses internally
who knows
it's going to affect anyone here even in the long term, unless they work for google

There are much better option including Archos and Cowon

Though, consumers are not really as important of a target.
Hacking Google is much more of an accomplishment than hacking a person's computer

This is true, although the hackers compromised many Chinese GMail accounts - so I expect Google to have higher security standards then they did at their HQ in China.
As for IE, lol they failed.
Everyone is freaking out about this, but it is understandable as to why they are doing this. Chinese hackers are more used to Windows hacking, and Unix would take some time to adapt to. I would rather they just force Linux instead of giving Mac a choice, but only because I would rather their money be spent better
Their stocks would drop because they would be losing so much money :V

Everything you just said is wrong. Only reason why malware exists so prevalently on Windows is because it's the OS that's used the most. Meaning that when someone write a malicious script targeting Windows he can most likely affect much more computers rather than a Mac or Linux. That's common knowledge. However I know you're a troll, I'm just pointing that out to everyone else who does actually think that.
ALL the cool kids use linux.
From what I've seen 80-90% of linux users are stuck-up egotistical elitist. Which makes them not cool.
