"whoops"
"Oh Shiite"
AR-15s are the second most ubiquitous personal firearm after AKs tbh; it's no surprise one would see the occasional one in unexpected places.

In third-world countries they're outnumbered by FN FALs, H&K G3s, and various obsolete Soviet rifles. More importantly, there's a big difference between an AR-15 which anyone can get and a USG-issue M16 or M4 which would only be available through a military contract. As the article states, they're probably from Iraq.
Kind of reminds me of the movie Lord of War. There's probably some general from the pentagon who's playing both sides against each other.
The US has been selling and "gifting" their weapons overseas for decades. It's really not odd to see them in any military
Are you kidding me its not like the US is the sole producer or the sole owner of stocks of AR15 type rifles. Like the article says that could be from Iraq or any number of places. Theres something like a hundred thousand M16s in Iraq or some shit.
Or Lebanon. People forget that Lebanon is awash in AR-15 type rifles.
If I had to take a guess, the US is maybe trying to win the favour of both sides, just in case.
Obviously from Lebanon or Iraq, and this isn't anything new.
The only thing getting to me is that the gun in the picture is a toy
There's A1s and A2s all over Syria. I've seen plenty of pictures like this: And those are FSA. I don't know how this is news at all. Given that we've seen AUGs and FN2000s abound in Syria the metric shittons of M16s in the middle east are all bound to find their way in eventually.
It could just be from Assad's forces capturing (or killing) the rebels and taking their guns

US and Russian weapons end up everywhere and so it doesn't necessarily mean the US is supporting them. They've just flooded the markets so its inevitable.

Though, I really wouldn't put it past the US Government to fund both sides; what's a better way to insert your own puppet government than to let both shitty sides kill each other? After all, we have managed to stick our fingers in the Egyptian conflict.
