Crytek: 'The notion of single-player has to go away'
Gabe Newell said the same thing in 2011
He isn't saying the same thing at all. In fact, he even says "it's not about giving up on single player at all". He's just saying that multiplayer shouldn't be ignored - that is something completely different.
notion of single player has to go away...
you assholes at crytek know multiplayer came first right? you'd essentially be taking a giant step backwards in gaming..
also if you're even going to think about doing this, bring back fucking splitscreen. every time this is brought up it seems that it would benifit multiple parties. microtransactions would become the norm, people would have to buy multiple consoles just to have a simple lan party....
this statement is a complete oral fart of a subversive plan to take even more of our money for shittier quality.

Just pretend that the company went bankrupt after Crysis (because a PC exclusive that wasn't heavily marketed selling millions isn't good enough ;_;).
not to mention crysis has probably one of the most underwhelming single player campaigns around for being "such a good game"

If you actually read the article instead of OP's wonderfully contextualized title you will see that, substantially, they basically said the same thing.

they aren't talking about literally removing single player gameplay from video games holy shit read people.
Yeah but what about the games that inherently benefit from the complete opposite, like Amnesia, the first dead space for the most part and Alan Wake, those games greatly benefit from having an atmosphere of loneliness for most of or all of the game.
Should probably add Silent Hill to the list, can't imagine what'd happen to it if they added co-op or online multiplayer.
I have yet to see a horror game that works well co-op.
CO-OP takes all the horror away.
To me, Co-op in horror games makes it less scary and more...to say the least, hilariously bad. (Doom 3 for example)

they aren't talking about that NOW, but is obvious this what they want in the long run, come on forcing everything into multiplayer model would increase profits like crazy, also diminish piracy, luckily the indie scene is growing, hopefully it will grow even more, also they wouldn't have to worry about "silly" things such as actual decent story lol.
the scary part is that they can actually succeed, because most people don't care much for a game story, especially outside the US/europe/japan , and gaming is growing worldwide.
Because I want to hear 12 year olds calling everyone else on the server fggots when I come home from work and want to play a quick game.

why don't you holy shit read my fucking posts and you'll see that's not what i'm getting on about.
they want everything to be interconnected, constantly synced and connected with servers, all that shit. they want to create their own little ideal habitat so they can make more money, and a consumer environment that's much friendlier on publisher's bank accounts. it's as fucking simple as that. and in the end it's going to fuck consumers.
think about it, games with a story could become a completely niche thing. look at this giant shift in gaming in general. micro transactions, mini-arcade games, games that don't even bother to excuse whatever is going on with a half decent story...
[editline]3rd March 2013[/editline]
in fact most of the big sellers really only have story tacked on as an excuse to shoot some minority, or white people. whatever, just shoot things and get bloody goggles when you get shot. and regenerating health.
and less than half of the characters you play as survive the story.
a decline in true innovation and more focus on these gimmicky bullshit motion controllers and other mickey mouse bullshit like that.

Crytek's Mr. Yerli stated that forcing online to these games would make no sense in the sourced article
much like what our lord and saviour Gabe Newell said in 2011 in regards to Portal 2
Eeerk these are the guys with the rights to TimeSplitters.
Single player should never go away, what if you're in the middle of africa but still able to play the game? Wouldn't you want to be able to play then?
That said, games with single player in them only really work when they are designed around having a single player, not an afterthought/something so you have something extra to market (CoD)
If single player goes away, that's the point where I probably won't be a gamer anymore. I enjoy some multiplayer games but I adore the immersion most single player games offer.
I still like the idea of splitting the two components up in their own bite sized pieces. If you want CoD for the single player? Buy it for 30 bucks. if you want CoD for the multiplayer, buy just that for 30 bucks. And so on.
