I am just getting tired of this shit. It is a total different country today. How about making fun of america because it doesn't let women vote? Or the funny thing that blacks aren't allowed education and get sent to storm the beaches in normandy first because they are less valued than whites?

Well if I understood what I read about it so far correctly and I'm not at all sure about this, because prior to this event I knew jack shit about this subject:
The last actual census was done when Germany was still divided (West-Germany did its last one in 1987 and East Germany in 1981).

Now comes the bit I'm confused about:
After unification I assume all they did was put those two censuses together and from then on assume and estimate the population according to the local registration offices
(Einwohnermeldeämter, where you're supposed to go when you move to a new town in Germany, where you will be registered for your new place and automatically deregistered from your old one).
But what can happen is that people don't go to these registration offices when they move
(students often do this; meaning they are still registered to their parents place, when actually they live and study in another town/city).
Also when people move abroad, I think they have to report that to their last local registration office.
So if that isn't done, it's no wonder that the registration offices in most places had unreliable numbers.
But I also heard some registration office had for example forgotten to deregister people that had died.

So long story short: The numbers they had where very old and unreliable, a new census was long overdue anyway, it's just surprising how wrong the estimate was that we previously had.
