I wish Phoenix would work better on vista, currently I'm stuck using Cool VL for mesh support that doesn't break at the drop of a hat (looking at you, Singularity)
The thing about second life is that you have to approach it in the same way you would with youtube.
You start off by looking at stuff you find pretty cool and require a lot of talent to pull off...

Because I'm too lazy to upgrade to 7. I'd rather upgrade my hardware first and then the OS but whatever. It's a pain in the ass too because any viewer on V3's codebase will work for maybe a day, and then it'll start fucking up so hard I have to reinstall the viewer. I like Cool VL though, even if it is a bit archaic. It gets the job done and it has full mesh support (sans uploading).

Yeah, the fact is that there is nothing exceedingly wrong with Second Life, its just that the more bizarre and niche aspects of it always seem to be the most visible. But you can actually do a good bit with it and have a lot of fun.
I mean, look at this image Chaoss posted above:

The way I understand this "mesh" thing (and I'm only getting it from this thread), you can pretty much upload whatever model and the game will attempt to adapt to it.
So if I try again I'm probably going to upload Alyx as my model (because why the fuck not).

Well yeah, you can upload any model. I'd stay away from copywritten things though, as tightasses (COUGH*CURIOUS*COUGH) will get their panties in a bunch and report you. I very nearly got banned from that sandbox for putting up a model of Alduin and his wall from the starting load screen in Skyrim, and I wasn't even the one who ripped and uploaded it. Just a word of caution.

This is one of the reasons you have to have payment info and take that test before you can even upload mesh. (people still upload game content anyway). Uploading files from games is unaccepted because any idiot can go rip something from a game and upload it, and it takes away from the creators who actually have skills and put work into their stuff.
Things that were custom made for SL generally look and function 100x better though.

I agree with you completely, I just don't enjoy it when people are too lazy to inspect the object and look at the creator, instead of who owns it.
