• U.S. jury finds Nintendo liable for patent infringement. Ordered to pay 30 million to inventor of 3D

So now that you all have concluded that Seijiro Tomita is a patent troll. Can I get a list of all the other companies he have sued? Or his patent portfolio with vague patents that he has used to sue other companies with? Edit: If not, I have to rename the thread. Edit: I guess no one could provide anything so title changed from "Iwata Fought the Troll and the Troll Won: Nintendo Loses Patent Troll Case, Gets Sued for $30 Million" to "U.S. jury finds Nintendo liable for patent infringement. Ordered to pay 30 million to inventor of 3D-display tech"
Where's John Kirby when you need him?
Where's John Kirby when you need him?
In retirement, probably. It's been a few years.
that's assuming the only reason that people invent or innovate is to personally reap profit from it. that may be true now in a society and economic system that encourages that type of behavior, but it sure isn't the only reason. people generally invent because they see that a way of doing something can be improved upon, and often do want to make the world a better place through their inventions. maybe patents are necessary in a capitalist system where inventors are not provided for just for inventing, but are given money based on how well they can sell a product. but in principle, the idea that a person cannot use his or her knowledge to make their life easier or the lives of other people easier is, in my opinion, quite immoral. [editline]14th March 2013[/editline] knowledge is meant to be shared, not monopolized.
I hate to use the "fall into the wrong hands" cliche, but its sometimes true. With the advent of the internet anyone can use the database of knowledge, getting a patent is just a security measure to protect it from profiteers who profit from it without asking. I agree that it should be for the good of mankind, in fact I support that as a major incentive and reasoning to innovate.

Nintendo is far from the first person to use it. This is no better than Apple patenting Squares.
Plus sharp is the one who provides the screens for Nintendo, why are they the ones being sued?
Times like this, I wish I could start up a kickstarter for Nintendo.
Honestly I think Apple should be able to sew all phone companies that came out with "smart phones" after the first iPhone. Samsung, Nokia, etc.. truly didn't have a phone like the iPhone before Apple perfected it and released it to dominate the phone market. I mean before the iPhone the greatest popular piece of tech was the Razor flip phone. [editline]14th March 2013[/editline] sue*

If you call this lone inventor a patent troll, I'm wondering what you're going to call companies which sole purpose is to sue other companies and in such way gain profit. Edit: And can you tell me where you read about that he "copyrighted the illusion of stereoscopic illusions".

If he was awarded this patent, he's legit - he patented the principle it works on. Nintendo and everyone can, legally, take a hike. It's disputable how the patent system should or shouldn't work, but this guy isn't a patent troll at all.

But yes he is able to go against any one that with technology that is based on his patented technology. He may also be able to go against similar technology that is not based on his at all, but then it's up to the judge to decide if he's right or wrong. However, why does this single case make him a troll? He's using it as it should be used. [editline]14th March 2013[/editline] http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2013/01/how-newegg-crushed-the-shopping-cart-patent-and-saved-online-retail/ There's a patent troll. They've been suing several companies for using a simple shopping cart system. But guess what happened in the end? They failed, because despite Newegg's system being almost identical, it was not based on the patent's idea. So the troll company lost. My point is. This lone dude got an invention that covers a rather broad area. Unless he actively tries to sue everyone with similar kinds of technology, there's no reason to call him a troll. And even if he does it, he's probably going to lose.
However, why does this make him a troll? He's using it as it should be used.
This technology has been around way before 2008.
neogaf something?
Nonstop Gaming General. It's GameFAQs' "neutral zone" board where you can just talk about gaming as a whole instead of the specialized boards of the rest of the site, but it's also a notorious cesspit of trolls, stale in-jokes, and vehement factionism in an eternal @#$!-waving contest. It's essentially a more fanatical /v/ with usernames and without the guilt of visiting 4chan. But since you brought it up, they do consider themselves NeoGAF's rivals, though. Now, I have no clue. Maybe watching seeds in 3d.

I kind of doubt nintendo would purposely break this guys patent. Also, suspiciously enough, he used to work for Sony. Just because it's a patent doesn't mean you're the first one to think about it. Just because it's a patent, doesn't mean it should encompass every 3D technology out there.
Oh my...
Patent trolling needs to be a very massive federal crime I mean holy fuck. there's literally nothing good about it. He is using the system as it should be. Or is it just the Nintendo fans trying to protect their beloved companies perfect image?

Without patents there is nothing forcing an inventor to share his or her idea, but also nothing to protect the inventor should he or she decide to share their knowledge. The current patent system is flawed, but patents in essence are a very good thing. They ensure everyone can at some point reap the benefits, and ensure that for a short while the inventor is protected against thievery.

Unless glass free 3D is going to improve bioengineering of seeds, he shouldn't be hogging that patent.

In America at least. Disney lobbies the hell out of congress any time the public domain date for Steamboat Willie comes up.
Patents and copyrights suck. Sure they can protect innovators, but it can also screw them over (ie company patents someone else's invention) and people that want to use it as well. Innovation without imitation is worthless. I'm not saying that people should be allowed to claim others intellectual property as their own, I'm just saying patents and copyrights are terrible ways to go about it.

30 million dollars? Does nintendo give any fucks about this?
Probably not
