Someone nearby accidentally discharged his gun, then realised how much shit he would be in if he got caught and decided to get the fuck out.
Edit: Things like this are bound to happen every once in a while because in USA everyone has a gun and carries it in his back pocket.
I don't recommend using a 7.62x39 to hit a target from a distance anyways. Sure the caliber and it's respective firearm may be great and all but comparing my uncle's 5.56x45 AR-15 to his WASR-10 (which both have the same barrel length of 16.3(16.5) mind you) I would choose an AR-15 any day for that sort of task. I even remember one news story where they said "hurr durr a large calibar aykay furtysuvun was used" and it was a fucking 5.56 IMI Galil.

Either round won't go through bulletproof glass, so it's a moot point.
You'd pretty much need a tank shell to penetrate the White House's windows. A single AK round fired from half a mile away isn't quite going to cut it.
